Both Teams To Score

Although Belgium could feel hard done by with disallowed goals and a host of chances, Slovakia still had four shots on target and were a real threat to the Belgian defence. 

Romania showed against the Ukraine they can attack in numbers and were highly effective on the counter attack. With the Belgian’s backline not as strong as vintage sides in the past and the Romanians sky high in confidence after the opening day win, I see them having the opportunities to score, whether that’s in a tight contest or a consolation goal. 

After all, Belgium have to go for the win and will leave plenty of space chasing a winner for their opponents to exploit.

Marius Marin to be Shown a Card

The Romanian midfielder has been booked the last two times he completed a full 90 minutes and three of the last four times.

Whether he plays as one holding midfielder or one of a two man defensive midfield line, he’ll have his hands full against Amadou Onana, who averages 1.57 fouls drawn per 90 minutes and was fouled twice in his last game. 

He’ll be expected to provide support against the likes of Jeremy Doku who averages 3.19 fouls drawn per 90 and Kevin De Bruyne at 1.23 fouls drawn per 90. 

Romania will be fully motivated to secure at least a point here to get into the knockout stage and Belgium will be roving forward in a swarm.

Referee Szymon Marciniak averages 5.17 yellow cards per game in his European fixtures this season, putting him above average in the referee tables.

Kevin De Bruyne Over 0.5 Shots on Target

Man City’s ginger ninja has a shot on target in each of his last four appearances for Belgium and will probably see this tournament as one of his last chances for a shot at international silverware. 

I’m expecting the Romanians to be fouling in key areas of the pitch for Belgium to stop the likes of Jeremy Doku bursting through. 

De Bruyne should have a few opportunities from free kicks and from long range to test the Romanian goalkeeper and his recent consistency in getting shots on the mark and a game where Belgium go in as strong favourites should help his chances here.

Romelu Lukaku Anytime Goalscorer

The ex-Man United striker could consider himself extremely unfortunate not to have scored last time out against Slovakia, with two disallowed goals and several wasted opportunities by team mates to pass it to him in the right areas. 

His goalscoring record in qualifying was phenomenal, with 14 goals scored in his group, more than a goal per game. He’s the main man on penalty duty in a tournament where penalties have been lacking so far and - much like Kevin De Bruyne - will be desperate to win something for Belgium.

Another defeat here would signal the end of Belgium’s golden generation, while a draw will likely set up a more difficult round of 16 knockout tie if they win their final group game.
