Championship Predictions: Another Middlesbrough win? Will Burnley go top?

Coventry vs Oxford United

Coventry lost their opening game of the season away to Stoke but Bounced back with a win over Bristol City in the EFL Cup. Oxford United earned an impressive 2-0 win over Norwich in their first game but I expect them to fall short here. The Sky Blues hosted Oxford in the FA Cup back in January and won 6-1.

Derby vs Middlesbrough 

Derby’s defence looked fragile as they shipped four goals at Ewood Park last weekend and that doesn’t bode well for this clash. Middlesbrough have three points on the board thanks to their narrow win over Swansea but it was the League Cup encounter with Leeds where they truly impressed. Michael Carrick’s side will carry that confidence into this clash and it should be enough to secure another win.

Portsmouth vs Luton

Portsmouth earned a draw at Elland Road last weekend but they face another promotion contender this weekend. Luton suffered a heavy defeat at home to 

Burnley on Monday night so they are looking to get their first points on the board at Fratton Park. Rob Edwards’ side are the favourites but we are backing the draw.

West Brom vs Leeds

It hasn’t been an ideal start to the season for Leeds. They drew with Portsmouth last week and Georginio Rutter’s release clause has since been activated by Brighton. Daniel Farke’s side lost 1-0 in this fixture last season and this will be a tough test. West Brom have lost just three of their last 20 league matches at the Hawthorns, winning 13.

Bristol City vs Millwall

Five of the last six meetings between these sides ended with just a goal in it, the other was a 0-0 draw. Millwall lost 3-2 at the Den last weekend and a narrow defeat is on the cards once again. Bristol City are unbeaten in their last five home matches in the Championship.

Burnley vs Cardiff

Burnley stole the show on the opening weekend of the Championship. Scott Parker has a point to prove after an unsuccessful stint in Belgium and his side looked electric as they hammered Luton 4-1 at Kenilworth Road. They welcome Cardiff to Turf Moor and they will be looking to earn another emphatic victory. The Bluebirds lost 3-0 the last time they came to this ground.

Norwich vs Blackburn

Norwich were disappointing last weekend as they were beaten by Oxford United. They beat Stevenage in the League Cup midweek and looked far more dangerous. Johannes Thorup will be hoping that his side carry that attacking impetus into this weekend’s clash at Carrow Road. However, Blackburn have lost on just two of their last eight visits to Norwich.

Plymouth vs Hull

Wayne Rooney’s side were outclassed by Sheffield Wednesday last weekend but the midweek win over Cheltenham gave the fans something to should about.

They face a Hull side that were beaten by Danny Rohl’s men midweek and they fared a lot better than Argyle. The Tigers have won six of their last 10 away matches and look good for another win on the road here.

Sheffield United vs QPR

Sheffield United are aiming for another promotion with Chris Wilder back at the club. They were impressive in both their league win over Preston and their cup triumph over Wrexham. The Blades will have to be at their best against a QPR side that has done well on the road under Marti Cifuentes but the quality at Wilder’s disposal should be enough to get the team over the line.

Swansea vs Preston

Swansea kept a lot of the ball against Middlesbrough but they failed to force a save from Seny Dieng. They displayed much more attacking intent against Gillingham in the week and dominated the ball once more. Preston have lost five of their last six matches at the Liberty Stadium and conceded an average of 1.83 goals per game in the process.

Watford vs Stoke

Both of these sides made wining starts and the bookmakers are having a hard time splitting them here.  Watford are unbeaten in their five home matches under Tom Cleverley and the home crowd should help them secure the win here. Stoke picked up just seven wins on the road throughout the whole of last season.

Sunderland vs Sheffield Wednesday 

Sheffield Wednesday made the worst-ever start to a second tier last campaign last season. The outlook is already far more positive this time around.

They followed up the win over Plymouth with an impressive cup win away to Hull. Sunderland’s home form towards the end of last season was poor.

They failed to win any of their last seven match at the Stadium of Light so we could see the away side take the spoils on Sunday.
