Championship Predictions & Odds: Leeds to beat Burnley and a goal fest in Wales

Hull vs Sheffield United 

Hull have made a winless start to the season after losing some key players in the summer. Their three draws mean they sit in 19th place in the Championship table but I don’t fancy them to add to that points tally when they take on Sheffield United.

The Blades beat Watford 1-0 in their last match and are unbeaten in four. They also boast a strong record against the Tigers, having won five of the last six meetings.

Leeds vs Burnley

Leeds are a point ahead of Burnley coming into the weekend. Much like last season, Daniel Farke’s team started slowly but recovered with back-to-back wins. They come into this round of fixtures in 4th. They are unbeaten in their last five matches against the Clarets and have won the last two encounters at Elland Road. Home advantage should be enough to get them over the line once again.

Millwall vs Luton

Luton were expected to be amongst the frontrunners in the second tier this season having kept their team together following Premier League relegation. However, Rob Edwards’ side have picked up a single point and sit in the bottom three. Millwall have four points after as many matches. Four of the last five head-to-heads between these sides have ended in a draw and we could well see another here.

Oxford United vs Stoke

Both of these sides have amassed a total of six points after four league games. Oxford United, fresh from League One promotion, will be delighted with the way they have performed and will be hopeful of securing another positive result here. The U’s have won both of their matches on home turf so far this season, which includes an impressive 2-0 win over Norwich.

Blackburn vs Bristol City

Blackburn are sitting pretty in 5th place and that’s largely to do with their attack. Their average of 2.25 goals per game is the third highest in the Championship and it should be enough to get the better of Bristol City here. The Robins were beaten 3-0 by Derby in their last league game on the road. They were also beaten on their last visit to Ewood Park.

Derby vs Cardiff

Cardiff are bottom of the league but have had a difficult run of fixtures. They have beaten by Sunderland, Burnley and Middlesbrough, three teams that will have their sights set on automatic promotion. The Bluebirds earned a point against Swansea and this trip to Derby is a great opportunity for them to bag their first win. The Rams have lost four of their last five encounters with Cardiff and haven’t beaten them since 2018.

Middlesbrough vs Preston 

Middlesbrough are just outside of the playoffs coming into matchday five but they will feel they should be higher in the table. Michael Carrick’s team have performed extremely well and this is backed up by the underlying numbers. Their average xG of 2.02 per game is the highest in the division. Boro also have the sixth-lowest xGA. Preston have lost 4-0 on their last two visits to the Riverside Stadium.

Plymouth vs Sunderland

Wayne Rooney is still awaiting his first win as Plymouth boss. They’ve improved since being hammered 4-0 by Sheffield Wednesday on the opening weekend but getting a result against a rampant Sunderland looks a tall order. The Black Cats are top of the tree having won all four of their matches. They have conceded just one goal and scored 10.

Sheffield Wednesday vs QPR

Sheffield Wednesday made a dream start with a 4-0 win but things are looking bleaker following three defeats. The Owls have failed to score in any of their league matches since the opening weekend and are now 20th in the table.  QPR are unbeaten in their last three league games and won at Kenilworth Road before the international break. Rangers finished just three points above Wednesday in the last campaign but the early season form suggests they can do better this term.

Swansea vs Norwich

Swansea suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of West Brom in their last outing. Luke Williams’ side have the fourth-highest xGA in the Championship with an average of 1.67 so we should see some goals here. However, the Canaries have a poor record against the Swans. They have won just one of the last five head-to-heads and lost 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium last season.

Watford vs Coventry

Watford’s perfect record ended with a 1-0 defeat on the road against Sheffield United before the international break. However, they will be confident of getting back to winning ways when they return to Vicarage Road. The Hornets have scored an average of two goals per game in the league this far. They face a Coventry side that are without a win in their last five away matches in the Championship dating back to last season.

Portsmouth vs West Brom

Portsmouth are back in the second tier but are still hunting for their first win. They have picked up three draws in four matches, which has been enough to keep them out of the relegation zone but they know wins are crucial, particularly at Fratton Park. West Brom come into this one on the back of two straight victories and are the favourites for this clash. Nevertheless, Pompey have enough about them to make this tough for the visitors and could hold out for a point.
