England head to Belgrade on Tuesday for what is comfortably their toughest test of World Cup qualifying so far. Four wins from four have left Thomas Tuchel’s side top of Group K without conceding a goal, yet their performances have been far from what we expect from them.

A laboured 2-0 win over Andorra last time out did little to ease concerns that the Three Lions are struggling to break down organised defences, and Serbia will provide exactly that type of challenge.

Dragan Stojković’s men sit second in the group and remain unbeaten, boasting a great home record and a frontline lead by Aleksandar Mitrović and Dušan Vlahović.

England won 1-0 last time out against them at Euro 2024 thanks to Jude Bellingham. For Tuchel, a win would not only maintain England’s perfect start but also help silence growing doubts over the team as a whole.

Serbia know England have struggled against compact defences under Tuchel and with Mitrović and Vlahović up front they’ll fancy their chances of hurting the Three Lions on the counter rather than going toe to toe. England, meanwhile, have won four from four in qualifying but rarely looked free-flowing, particularly against sides that sit deep. A low-scoring game looks on the cards again.
