Newcastle vs Man City Match Prediction

Considering Newcastle finished in a Champions League spot last season and won the Carabao Cup, Eddie Howe's side have seriously underperformed during the early months of this campaign.

The Toon are surprisingly just two points above the relegation zone, have won three of their 11 Premier League games and are struggling all over the pitch ahead of a tough run of fixtures.

Manchester City are yet to hit top form, but continue to go about their business quietly and can move within one point of leaders Arsenal with a sixth Premier League win in seven.

Pep Guardiola's side have an outstanding recent record against Newcastle and head to St James' Park unbeaten in their last 12 meetings (W9 D3).

Score prediction: Newcastle 1-3 Man City

An intriguing battle takes place on Saturday night as Newcastle host Man City in a clash between two sides at opposite ends of the form table. Eddie Howe will be desperate to get his Toon Army back on track whilst City fans will be hoping to close the gap to Arsenal to one point and put pressure on the Gunners ahead of Sunday’s North London Derby.

Man City to win

Whilst the 3-0 defeat of Liverpool will have caught the eye of many, the manner of City’s performance was perhaps more noteworthy as there was an ominous feel about their dominance. After an extended period in transition, Pep Guardiola appears to have settled on a line-up and system that he’s happy with. Nico O’Reilly looks assured at left back, Nico Gonzalez is beginning to look every bit the Rodri replacement he was signed to be and Jeremy Doku and Erling Haaland are two of the most in form attackers in Europe right now. The Cityzens have hit their stride and with five wins in their last six league games, have eyes fixed firmly on chasing down Arsenal.

With just two league wins since September, Newcastle’s form is in stark contrast to their visitors and back-to-back 3-1 defeats to West Ham and Brentford have led to plenty of criticism from Magpies fans. The hosts are languishing in 14th place in the league table, just two points above the drop zone and six points adrift of the top six and will not be relishing the visit of a City side who have beaten them in nine of the last eleven league meetings.

Erling Haaland to score anytime

Erling Haaland is inevitable – or at least it feels that way. The Norwegian has plundered a massive 22 goals in just 19 appearances across all competitions for City this season and has found the back of the net in 17 of his last 18 games for club and country. His combination of pace, power and composure in front of goal make him impossible to stop and with him sat just one short of 100 Premier League goals, he’ll be desperate to notch that milestone. He’ll also want to do so against a Newcastle side whom he hasn’t scored against in any of his last five attempts.

Newcastle have only kept one clean sheet in their last six league games, conceding 11 goals in that period and so come into this game looking fragile at the back. Last time out, Igor Thiago netted a brace for Brentford in a physically domineering performance and given Haaland’s credentials in that area, he’ll be confident of doing similar to Newcastle’s back line.

Bruno Guimaraes to be carded

Someone who will be putting it all on the line in an attempt to get Newcastle back on track will be midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian is loved on Tyneside for his passion and whilst this is an admirable quality, it often leads to him crossing the line in the eye of the officials.

Guimaraes has committed 2.11 fouls per 90 in league action this season, being carded on three occasions but it is his record in this fixture which makes this a selection a must back for our betbuilder. Across nine games against City, he’s averaged 2.29 fouls per 90 and incredibly has found his way into the referee’s notebook in eight of those. He only avoided a card in the sides

FA Cup meeting in 2024 which means that he’s been booked in seven consecutive league games against Pep’s men.

Bruno Guimaraes to be fouled 2+ times

Having said that he’s no stranger to referees in these games, Bruno Guimaraes continues to be one of the most fouled players in the Premier League, drawing 2.61 per 90 and being brought down at least three times in every game at St James’ Park. The combative Brazilian is excellent at winning cheap fouls in defensive areas and his ability to draw late contact is second only to Jack Grealish this season.

Key to this bet is that Bruno will be directly up against Nico Gonzalez in the middle of the park who needs no invitation to get stuck in. Since arriving in the Premier League, he’s committed 1.4 fouls per 90 and away from home that average jumps up to 2.14 as he takes on the role of disrupting counter attacks in place of Rodri. With so many players forced into bringing Guimaraes down this season, Gonzalez looks to have the data to suggest he’ll do similar.
