Manchester United welcome West Ham to Old Trafford on Thursday with both sides trying to steady themselves after mixed weekends. United’s comeback win at Crystal Palace extended their recent revival meaning they’ve now lost just one of their last seven league games but their form at Old Trafford remains fragile. A 1-0 defeat to ten men Everton, and Ruben Amorim is edging uncomfortably close to an unwanted club record for home losses.
West Ham arrive with their own issues. A promising unbeaten run was abruptly halted by Liverpool (understandably mind), and Lucas Paquetá’s red card leaves them short of creativity. Nuno Espírito Santo is still searching for his first away league win as Hammers boss, and his side have conceded at least twice in six of their last seven league games on the road.
Their record at Old Trafford is famously bleak, though last season’s 2-0 win ended a 16 game drought. Jarrod Bowen, who scored in both fixtures last season, will again be central to West Ham's hopes, though he is currently seven league games without a goal.
Jarrod Bowen 1+ Shot on Target
Bowen remains one of West Ham’s most reliable shooting threats, landing at least one shot on target in 15 of his last 18 games. The only blanks came against Bournemouth, Arsenal and Liverpool, the latter two, matches where West Ham struggled to build any sustained attacking pressure. He’s also been chasing a goal for a while now, which usually leads to him taking on more chances rather than fewer. With Paquetá suspended and a big chunk of West Ham’s creative output removed, the burden shifts even more onto Bowen to drive attacks and test the goalkeeper. Against a United side that have kept just one clean sheet in their last 14 across all competitions, he should get the opportunity to work Lammens at least once.
Bryan Mbeumo 1+ Shot on Target
If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. We’ve gone to Mbeumo a few times now and there’s no reason to stop here, especially against a West Ham side that have been defensively poor all season. Mbeumo is on a seven game streak for landing a shot on target and leads the United team in this metric, averaging 1.39 SOT per 90. He’s also their top scorer with five goals, so he’s consistently the one pulling the trigger in key moments. West Ham’s numbers only make this more appealing, they’re allowing 35% more shots on target than the league average, which underlines just how vulnerable they are when teams run at them. With United creating chances freely lately, Mbeumo should be involved again.
Callum Wilson 1+ Shot on Target
Rounding off the SOT treble with Wilson. He’s been in strong form since coming into the West Ham side, scoring three goals in his last three games and looking sharp in every outing. What strengthens the angle is that Wilson is actually averaging more shots on target per 90 this season than Bowen, yet the market still prices him at bigger odds. That discrepancy is worth exploiting.
