Group B Introduction

Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup takes place from June 12 to 24, consisting of co-hosts Canada, European sides Switzerland and Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Asian champions Qatar. Switzerland arrive as the highest-ranked team in the group, but Canada will enjoy strong home support with two of their three group stage matches scheduled in Canadian cities.

Group B shapes up as a competitive contest, with Switzerland's tournament pedigree offset by Canada's home advantage, Bosnia's European edge, and a Qatar side desperate to improve on their dismal debut four years ago. On paper, two spots are wide open, and the race for qualification promises to go down to the wire.

Group B Teams: Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Qatar

Team Profiles

Switzerland

FIFA Ranking: 17
Manager: Murat Yakin
Star Player: Granit Xhaka

Odds to Win Group B: 4/6 (implied probability: ~60%)
Odds to Win Tournament: 150/1 (implied probability: ~0.7%)

The squad Murat Yakin has assembled is balanced and experienced, with Granit Xhaka leading the side into his fourth consecutive World Cup, Manuel Akanji bringing Champions League quality to the defence, and Breel Embolo carrying the goalscoring responsibility up front.

Switzerland were very comfortable in qualifying, finishing top of UEFA Group B ahead of Kosovo, Slovenia and Sweden, winning four games and drawing two. This isn't a flashy team, but it is organised, hard to beat, and used to deep tournament runs. Their realistic ceiling is the quarter-finals, a stage they reached at Euro 2024 under Yakin.

Embolo scored four goals in six appearances during World Cup qualifying, and Xhaka's leadership and passing range will be essential to Switzerland's control of games in Group B. Murat Yakin has set the bar boldly, saying his side want to play "the best World Cup ever seen from a Swiss team," with the quarter-final exit against England at Euro 2024 giving his squad something to dream about.

At 150/1 for the tournament, Switzerland are not outright contenders, but group winners at 4/5 is as close to a formality as Group B offers.

Canada

FIFA Ranking: 30
Manager: Jesse Marsch
Star Player: Alphonso Davies
Odds to Win Group B: 9/4 (implied probability: ~31%)
Odds to Win Tournament: 200/1 (implied probability: ~0.5%)

Ranked 30th in the world, this will be Canada's first home World Cup, and manager Jesse Marsch has described this squad as "one of the best-ever assembled" for the country.

Captain Alphonso Davies is racing to be fit for the June 12 opener against Bosnia after a hamstring injury, with a late call on his availability expected. Jonathan David, now at Juventus, and Tajon Buchanan at Villarreal complete a dynamic front line. The team has been incredibly resilient under Marsch, dropping only one of their last 20 matches and finding the net 1.55 times per game on average across that run.

A goalless draw against Colombia proved they can handle elite pressure on the international stage.  At 200/1 for the tournament, there is nothing there, but home advantage and a winnable group make Canada to qualify a far more compelling proposition.

Bosnia & Herzegovina

FIFA Ranking: 71
Manager: Sergej Barbarez
Star Player: Edin Dzeko
Odds to Win Group B: 13/2 (implied probability: ~13%)
Odds to Win Tournament: 500/1 (implied probability: ~0.2%)

The headline, as it has been for nearly two decades, is Edin Dzeko. Now 40 years old and playing for Schalke, the former Manchester City striker became the oldest goalscorer in 2. Bundesliga history earlier this year and remains the focal point of Bosnia's attack.

The story of how Bosnia got to this World Cup is worth sitting with. They beat Wales on penalties in Cardiff on March 26, then hosted Italy five days later. Italy went ahead. Alessandro Bastoni was sent off right before half-time. Haris Tabakovic pounced on an Edin Dzeko rebound to equalise, and Bosnia held their nerve through another shootout to eliminate the four-time world champions for the second consecutive World Cup cycle.

Coach Sergej Barbarez, who had zero senior management experience when he took the job in April 2024, allowed himself to say afterwards "We're two years ahead of schedule." There remains an over-reliance on the 40-year-old Dzeko in attack, and several of their exciting youngsters like Bajraktarevic and Alajbegovic may not be ready to impose themselves on the biggest stage.

At 500/1 to win the tournament, there is no value there, but as genuine play-off battle-hardened underdogs, Bosnia to qualify at long odds deserves a look.

Qatar

FIFA Ranking: 55
Manager: Julen Lopetegui
Star Player: Akram Afif
Odds to Win Group B: 33/1 (implied probability: ~3%)
Odds to Win Tournament: 1000/1 (implied probability: ~0.1%)

Former Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui, appointed in May 2025, secured Qatar's first World Cup qualification earned on merit through the AFC Fourth Round. Striker Almoez Ali is Qatar's all-time top scorer, while Akram Afif is the chief creator, having registered 11 assists across 16 qualifying appearances, more than any other player in AFC qualifying.

Qatar are back after scoring just one goal and losing all three of their matches as the 2022 host nation. The Maroon One are a side who rarely travel, and being out of their comfort zone in North America is likely to have a significant impact on their chances. They have been defeated by Palestine, Tunisia and Zimbabwe in friendlies over the past year, while 24 goals conceded in their last 10 qualifying fixtures does not inspire confidence.

Qatar are arguably too dependent on Afif to create chances, and if opponents isolate him, their attacking play can become extremely predictable. Anything less than a place in the Round of 32 would be disappointing, because the revised format is designed to give competent teams more chance to progress. At 1000/1 for the tournament, there is no bet. Qatar will do well to pick up a single point in this group.

Who is Favourite to Win Group B?

Switzerland sit at 4/6 (implied: ~60%) to win Group B, with Canada priced as the closest challenger at around 9/4 (implied: ~31%). The gap between Switzerland and the rest reflects their superior FIFA ranking, six consecutive World Cup appearances, and a settled spine under Yakin.

Behind them, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar sit well adrift, with Bosnia's implied probability around 13% and Qatar trailing at just 3%, underlining just how wide open the race for second place is, even if it ultimately comes down to Canada's home advantage against Bosnia's tournament experience.
