We have a multi-competition treble for Sunday's footy!
Man City v Liverpool - Community Shield - 15:00
The Community Shield is always a nice curtain-raiser for the new football season, and Man City v Liverpool should be a cracker.
For this match, my tip is both teams to score.
Both teams have found the net in three of the last four fixtures between these two, and with both sides likely to start a host of players whose pre-seasons were impacted by AFCON or Copa America action, don’t be surprised to see a lot of rustiness.
11 of the last 16 Community Shield matches have seen both teams score, so this is a tip which certainly has legs.
Bristol City v Leeds - Championship - 16:30
Bristol City v Leeds looks like a mouth-watering prospect in the Championship, and it’s another fixture where I expect both teams to score.
Both teams do look strong on paper, but City might be unsettled at the back due to Adam Webster’s likely move to Brighton, while Leeds will have young Ben White making his debut at centre-half – and I don’t believe his side will be able to repel this excellent Robins outfit at Ashton Gate for 90 minutes.
Benfica v Sporting - Portuguese Super Cup - 20:45
In the Portuguese Super Cup, I expect under 2.5 goals to be scored.
16 of the last 20 (league) meetings between these two have seen under three goals scored; I appreciate this is a one-off Super Cup match, but those sort of results generally suggest the likelihood of a high-scoring game on Sunday is low.
