While the title is out of reach for Borussia Dortmund, they still showed they have plenty of determination left in the tank, as they worked incredibly hard to overcome an excellent Hertha Berlin side 1-0 over the weekend.

Lucien Favre’s men, barring an almighty slip-up, are at least guaranteed Champions League football next season, but they’ll be well aware of the problems that this Fortuna Dusseldorf side could cause them.

The hosts are still three points off guaranteed safety, and three points clear of Werder Bremen back in the automatic relegation places, so their season is still very much alive, with Uwe Rosler impressively galvanising his side – so much so that they’ve only lost two of their 13 matches under their new boss, against Bayern and Borussia Monchengladbach.

This excellent record has given them a real shot of staying up, and Rosler will instil belief in his men ahead of Dortmund’s visit, knowing full well that this is a bit of a free hit.

Fortuna’s excellent resilience and fortitude has seen the bookies provide fairly generous prices in the handicap market, where I like the look of evens for Dortmund -1.

They may have only lost twice, but both defeats were thumpings (4-1 against Gladbach and 5-0 against Bayern), while Dortmund have already beaten Schalke, Wolfsburg and Paderborn by more than a single goal since the Bundesliga’s resumption.

Dortmund hammered Fortuna 5-0 back in December, and while the hosts are a very different (better) side these days, this does strike me as one of those fixtures where the superior quality of Dortmund will just overwhelm their limited-but-spirited opponents.

At the price quoted, Dortmund -1 looks a bet.
