Back Tuesday's Champions League clash in Leverkusen to end all square.
Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid - Tuesday 19:45, BT Sport 1
Leverkusen have won back to back Bundesliga games for the first time in more than three months so should be relatively confident as they approach this clash, having previously suffered from a total lack of consistency in this campaign. They were unbeaten in the group stages, as they saw off the challenges of Monaco, Spurs and CSKA and Roger Schmidt’s side have proven themselves at home in Europe in recent years. They’ve beaten the likes of Benfica, Zenit, Monaco, Sporting, Lazio and Atletico here, while also holding Roma, Barcelona, Villarreal and Spurs to draws since the start of 2014/15.
Atletico looked to be heading for a draw at the weekend, but just as they did the week before they turned it around, with Gameiro netting a hat-trick between the 80th and 85th minutes. They topped a group featuring Bayern but they only scored twice in their three away games and we don’t expect them to throw caution to the wind in this opening leg. Atleti have scored just nine times in their last 13 European away matches as eight have landed Under 1.5 Goals. Moreover, in their eight opening legs in the Champions League knockouts since 2013/14 there have been a total of just eight goals as six have had fewer than two strikes and six have been goalless at half-time.
That includes nullifying the attacks of Bayern, Barca and Real Madrid so we expect their ‘unders’ trend to prevail. However, they’ve won only one of the last seven of those opening legs including none of the four on the road (W0-D2-L2). With four of those seven finishing all-square, including three 0-0s, we expect Simeone to be happy with a share of the spoils and the draw looks excellent value at 3.25.
