Bristol City v Fulham - Wednesday 20:00

Things are getting serious for Bristol City at the bottom of the Championship. A relegation battle that seemed inconceivable two months ago is now a stone cold reality. Burton’s win over Norwich at the weekend - their third in five matches - lifted them above the Robins and the cushion on third-from-bottom Wigan is only two points. Needless to say, Lee Johnson is under big pressure.

It’s hard to know what we should expect in this scenario without knowing how the City players truly feel about Johnson and to what extent they are prepared to fight his corner. If we follow the shot data generated over the past 16 matches, then the value here is clearly with Fulham but out of respect for some eye-catching recruitment in January, we’ll swerve that option at 7/5.

While City had their feet up on Sunday, mentally preparing for this game, Fulham were mostly chasing shadows against Tottenham. Now the Cottagers can either be inspired by knowing this challenge is going to be a whole lot easier, or their confidence has taken a hit and they carry that, along with the physical effects of a punishing 90 minutes, into this game.

In short, if this contest is close and competitive, the margins are surely with the home team and they might well eke out a much-needed win. But if Fulham bring their A-game, as they are liable to do once every three or four weeks, they can land the over 2.5 away team goals bet at tasty odds of 7/2. For Johnson, the latter possibility doesn’t bear thinking about.
