Deportivo La Coruna v Atletico Madrid – Thursday 19:45, Sky Interactive

Atletico Madrid’s league progress suffered a blow on Sunday when they suffered a 2-1home defeat to Barcelona, and they are holding onto fourth place by just one point ahead of Sociedad. They now face Deportivo, who sacked coach Gaizka Garitano after four consecutive losses (and nine games without a win). They lie in 17th, just two points above the drop zone, but having picked up points in three of their last four home games they’ll feel that they stand a chance of frustrating Atletico here.

However, Atleti have won each of the four matches they’ve played at bottom-six sides this season, conceding only once in that run and winning by more than one goal on each occasion, while they’ve won eight of 11 such games over the last two seasons. They are undefeated in their last nine away across all competitions and they’ve scored 20 in that period, so we could see a few goals here. Deportivo haven’t scored in their last two home games and may be in disarray after the loss of their manager, so we will likely see an extension to their run of losses.

Given Atleti’s strong form against struggling sides and excellent away form in general, we see them covering the -1 handicap. They’ve not lost at Deportivo since 2009, and with Depor struggling for goals we think the visitors could run amok.
