Southampton v Man Utd – Saturday 15:00
Man Utd have had a fantastic week after 3-0 and 4-0 wins over Basel and Everton respectively, meaning they’re now W5-D1-L0 across all competitions to date, and they’ve scored at least twice in each game and kept a clean sheet in all five victories. Southampton have seen four of their five games feature fewer than three goals, though they’re yet to face a team that finished in last season’s top half and conceded twice in games against Watford and West Ham as that lack of goals has primarily come from their end. The Saints only managed a single goal in six fixtures hosting top-six opposition last term so we’re backing Man Utd to win to nil.
The Saints lost eight of 12 winless games at all venues against the top six last term with their opponents covering the -1 handicap in six of these defeats. At St. Mary’s alone they lost four of six with each defeat by at least two goals, and with Virgil van Dijk still working on match fitness and yet to return to the starting XI we’re backing Man Utd -1 on the handicap.
Whilst Lukaku has netted six goals in six games across all competitions and taken a lot of the plaudits for Utd’s great start, Marcus Rashford has scored Man Utd’s opening goal in two of their last three league games as well as netting from the bench against Basel. He’s actually netted United’s first in four of the last six competitive games in which he’s scored, with his goal the first of the encounter in three of these. We’re backing him as the first goalscorer.
