Ryan Elliott previews Southampton vs Arsenal - will things get even worse for The Gunners?
Arsenal’s capitulation against Brighton last Saturday pretty much summed up their season. A lack of quality and backbone saw them sunk in the 95th minute, and things don’t get any easier as they prepare to face a Southampton side who will be licking their lips.
The Saints dominated Norwich in their most recent encounter, and while Arsenal are doubtless a better side than the basement boys, their lack of fight will give the home side real belief that they can secure all three points.
Defensively, Arsenal are a mess, in midfield they’re lightweight and innocuous, while up front they simple seem to rely on individual moments of brilliance – it’s not sustainable.
There are generally goals in this fixture, with Southampton winning the last game between these two at St. Mary’s 3-2, and considering The Gunners are seemingly there for the taking, I’m backing another home win this time around.
Danny Ings is one of the form strikers in Europe, and he’ll cause Arsenal’s beleaguered defence similar problems to Neal Maupay.
The injury to Arsenal’s best player, Bernd Leno, is another huge headache for Mikel Arteta, and considering how the Brighton game panned out, I’m confident that Southampton, with plenty more bottle than Arsenal, will claim the points.
Danny Ings picked up from where he left off pre-lockdown with the opening goal against Norwich, and I fancy him to score first once again at 9/2.
Ings has scored first in two of the last three games between these two sides, and there’s nothing to convince me that he’ll have any less joy this time around.
Whoever Arteta selects at centre-back will struggle against Ings (none of them are good enough), and I have a feeling he’ll give them a rotten time.
