Get the lowdown on the most famous Golf tournament held on American soil
When is the Masters?
The 2019 Masters will take place from Thursday 11th April – Sunday 14th April. All entrants will play two rounds of holes, after which a ‘cut’ will take place.
The remaining players will play a further two rounds, and the player with the lowest aggregate score will be declared the champion. Should there be a tie, then a sudden-death playoff will take place to determine an outright winner.
Why is it special?
The only major that is held on the same course every year, the Masters has been going for 81 years and is shrouded in tradition.
The Augusta National course is one of the most revered places in sport, and winners not only get a trophy but a hallowed green jacket, prized more by winners than anything else.
Who are this year’s favourites?
Rory McIlroy has been without a grand slam since 2014 but is 8/1 favourite to win the one major tournament that has so far eluded him.
Dustin Johnson is next in line at 12/1, looking to improve on his 4th placed finish three years ago. 20 former champions are expected in the field, ranging from last year’s winner Patrick Reed (66/1) to 1991 champion Ian Woosnam (10000/1).
What is the dress code?
Not only is there a dress code for patrons, but there is also a code for caddies as well. Those lucky enough to watch the action on the course are instructed to ‘dress like they are playing’.
Caddies meanwhile, have to wear a white boiler suit, a practise that continues from the time that Augusta gave players a caddy assigned to the club for the duration of the tournament. This practice only ended in 1983.
