Mauritius Open

2023 was the last time we saw this venue for the Mauritius Open when course designer Louis Oosthuizen managed the victory.

This course is by the coast so really open to the elements and the terrain of the golf course makes it even more 'linksy' in feel.

Pot bunkers is a feature and even though Oosthuizen knew the course very well it would be no surprise should a host of players with links form show up on the leaderboard on Sunday. Louis is a former Open Champion and 3rd placed Dan Brown back in 2023 has a host of links form to his name.

Tip 1: Jacob Skov Olesen - 2pts Each-Way

35/1 and six places available with Ladbrokes / Coral when publishing.

There are a few young bucks who could take inspiration from Jayden Schaper's breakthrough victory last week and one of the likelier candidates is Jacob Skov Olesen. I don't think the Dane has quite the talent that Schaper possesses but there is a type of golf he is suited to and his chances increase a fair bit when we arrive at a windy layout that rewards those with links form.

His best result on tour in terms of field strength was 5th at the Dunhill Links earlier in October. His third best effort on tour to date was 3rd at the Nexo Championship held at the Trump International Links. He co-led the Open Championship in July at Portrush after one round and of course he is a winner of the Amateur Championship at Ballyliffin.

His performances clearly increase under these conditions and he has faced tougher fields than this in the last few months. It wouldn't surprise me should another up and coming talent feed off Schaper's victory and a trip to Mauritius seems to have come at the perfect time for Skov.

Tip 2: Oliver Lindell - 1.75pts Each-Way

30/1 and six places available with Ladbrokes / Coral when publishing.

Another who can feed off Schaper's win is Oliver Lindell and he has a chance here in one of the weaker fields of the year to show what he can do.

Lindell's iron play has been absolutely breathtaking this season and you'd have thought with the quality of that he'd maybe landed a victory. However it hasn't happened yet and over the last month or so it has been the putter that has really let him down.

7th at the Trump International Links as well as a top 30 finish at Portrush are good signs for a test such as this. 7th at the K Club and 13th at Wentworth have also been signs of how good he can play in much deeper fields than this one.

I was a little surprised to see him so far down the betting and I wouldn't quite have him around double the price of the likes Dan Brown and John Parry.

Tip 3: Nathan Kimsey - 1pt Each-Way

60/1 with bet365's Each-Way Extra 8 Place market advised.

After a solid but unspectacular start to the season Nathan Kimsey then endured a nightmare of an Autumn and Winter period really struggling with all parts of his game. He was forced to head to the Qualifying School in Spain where he duly obliged and got his playing privileges for 2026.

The 2026 season started where he left off 2025 with two missed cuts in Australia but there were positive signs last week in South Africa where he finished 32nd. He shot a final round of 65 there only beaten by four others and should he take that form onto Mauritius he could outplay his odds.

A qualifier from Royal Cinque Ports for this year's Open Championship was a decent sign for these types of tests as was his effort in the Dunhill Links this year. He may have finished far down the field but at St Andrews he equalled the consecutive birdie record on tour by managing 9 on the trot from the 2nd through to the 10th there. He was right up with the leaders at that time of the event on day 2 but struggled after that run. Has credentials for this test and after last week looks an ounce of value.

Tip 4: Eddie Pepperell - 1pt Each-Way

90/1 and six places available with BetMGM.

I can't help but have a bet on Eddie Pepperell here this week. If anyone questioned just what motivation Eddie has for the game at this stage that was all dismissed when he went to the Qualifying School last month and managed to gain his tour card. His reaction was telling, breaking down before going on to say what it meant to him and the people around him. I would not be surprised should that give him an extra lease of life to work even harder this time around.

The 2 events in Australia were much, much stronger than this field this week and whilst he made the cut in Queensland he missed the weekend at Royal Melbourne. Both those events are solid enough preparation for what we'll see this week and Eddie has a strong record in these types of tests. A win at Walton Heath, runner up finishes at Gullane and Royal County Down as well as a win in Qatar spells this is where his strength lies and he could get off to a fast start for the season on a suitable track.

Tip 5: Fred Biondi - 0.75pts Each-Way

200/1 with bet365's Each-Way Extra 8 Place Market advised.

Fred Biondi is an interesting one here this week and despite needing more evidence as to how he is going to go in this grade I'm going to take the risk early.

Hailing from Florida University with plenty of experience in the wind Biondi got into the Qualifying School having lost out in the previous phase. He took full advantage and managed his tour card in Spain. An effort on the PGA Tour School didn't go to plan last week so there's a chance he could be a bit fatigued hence stakes will be relatively low.

He missed the cut in the Australian PGA but it was on the number at 1 under which is a respectable enough total. 26th in the Valspar Championship in 2024, 23rd in the RSM Classic and 13th in Bermuda in 2023 is a sign of the golf he can play and with some wind to play with here he should be well equipped. Could well be ahead of the handicapper.
