TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Connecticut. This is a fairly short par 70 track that yields plenty of low scores. In recent years those who have gone well at the US Open have often continued that good golf to River Highlands.

Chez Reavie and Harris English both won this event the week after finishing 3rd in the US Open. Nevertheless, Oakmont was a gruelling week and there will be plenty of tired golfers arriving here.

Over the years putting has proven to be highly important with the leader in that category making the top 5 at the end of the week in two of the last three years. Bradley led the putting statistics when winning two years ago but what you do from tee to green is equally as important. In the last three renewals only one of the fourteen placers have been ranked outside the top 20 in that statistic for the week.

Those making birdies almost every other hole need only apply here and we'll be looking to a winning score beyond 20 under par more than likely.

Robert MacIntyre at 40/1 (Eight Places)

Once again I have found myself fighting the urge to back Scottie Scheffler. He has a tremendous record the week after Majors having won the week after both the US Open and the Masters. There is no questioning his desire to get another one on the board. However, his winless streak continues and maybe being in contention last week isn't quite the perfect preparation for this. Either way, it's maybe prudent not to board the train until he lands another victory then more will undoubtedly follow quickly.

Robert MacIntyre finishes last week tied for 39th place at the US Open and that tends to be around the sweet spot in terms of how you fare the following the week at the Travelers. The last two winners of this had finished 33rd and 41st and quite possibly a stress free weekend so to speak at the US Open is ideal preparation. MacIntyre has posted a 4th placed finish and another top 10 at Sawgrass which suggests he is well equipped for Pete Dye layouts. For an event that yields such good results for the best putters this should really suit the Scot. MacIntyre ranked 19th on the greens last week at Shinnecock which were a very tough examination. It was just last month where he went off a general 18/1 shot in the Charles Schwab behind the likes of Aberg who was 12/1. Aberg has drifted to 20/1 for this event whilst MacIntyre is out to as big as 50/1 on opening shows.

Akshay Bhatia at 50/1 (Eight Places)

Akshay Bhatia has won the Valero Texas Open and the Barracuda both low scoring affairs and he could easily get into contention at another one this week. His win at the Arnold Palmer earlier on in the year was another slightly easier than the norm test there at Bayhill and he certainly dials it up on these easier courses. Shinnecock last week was the opposite but it was an eye catching effort from the Californian. He ranked 8th on approach and 23rd off the tee last week and a sharper short game would have seen him in with more of a chance come Sunday. With only one over par round from four at Shinnecock Bhatia was clearly in control of his golf ball and has to be on the radar here at TPC Highlands. With a signature event already bagged he will take confidence from a solid return to form at the US Open and he looks a really nice price.

Rickie Fowler at 90/1 (Eight Places)

Rickie Fowler has drifted to a big enough number to tempt me this week even though there are a handful of negatives. Since his runner up at Quail Hollow and subsequent made cut at the PGA the following week he has gone off the boil a little with his iron play suffering in particular. Two missed cuts at the Charles Schwab and the Memorial were followed by another at the US Open last week. However, he only missed the weekend on the number at Shinnecock and had ranked 14th from tee to green on day one. He got the worst of the weather on both Thursday and Friday so narrowly missing the cut was enough of a sign that this was no disaster. I am staggered this has resulted in him drifting to 100/1 when he has regularly been priced up between 25/1-40/1 for events such as these in the last couple of months. There are question marks surrounding his long game there is no doubt but the number is simply too big.
