As UK greyhound racing returns, Paul Millward has two tips for today at Hove and Sheffield.
With five wins from nine outings so far this year, CROSSFIELD NANCY (best price 11-2) is in the form of her life and there could still be more to come. The Wendy Short-trained bitch signed off pre-lockdown with a double at this level and the grader certainly appears to have given her every chance of completing a hat-trick.
In her comeback trial, she ran into some trouble rounding the first couple of bends but still did enough to persuade that fitness is not going to be a problem today. Given a level break, she should have too much speed for the runners on either side of her and that may well be the key to what could prove to be a vital first bend lead.
Even if the fails to lead by the turn, she should at least turn handy and has the stamina to come from a little off the pace. A few of these were not really showing a lot before the break and the main dangers are likely to be Power Ranger, who has good early speed, and Seasons Tornado, who will be hard to keep out things if turning anything like handy.
There is not much of a story behind RYBROOK ROCCO (best price 9-2) – this is his first ever race and he is taken to make it a winning one. He has just the three trials on his card, starting off on the 17 March and found around seven lengths come his third spin on Thursday.
It is always a tricky decision deciding whether to side with a first time out puppy, but he is almost certain to have a good more improvement left to come and has to be worth taking a chance on. His latest time is quicker than the best recent times of all bar one of these and trap one looks the icing on the cake.
