Although FORT DEL ORO (NAP) failed in her bid to land a nationwide punt at York last time out, she did more than enough to suggest those that backed her in to 11/8 favouritism weren’t a million miles away with their assessments of Edward Lynam’s filly and she looks well worth another stab returning to a track which clearly suits her well. The combination of fast ground and bumping into Lucky Kristale on a going day led to her demise on the Knavesmire, but she did finish nicely clear of the remainder so it was by no means a dispiriting performance. The fact that her canny handler let her take her chance in Group 3 race event after winning a maiden over the C&D the time before was a clear pointer to the regard the daughter of Lope De Vega is held in at home and in finishing a creditable third behind Mattmu and Toscanini, she more than justified that bold engagement. Although she has a little to find with Micky Halford’s charge based on that running, it wouldn’t come as the biggest shock in the world if she was able to bridge the gap and at top price 11/2, she rates a first-class each-way bet to hit the frame at the very least.

In what a typically wide-open renewal of this valuable prize, ARCHIE MEADE looks well capable of out-running his morning odds. Plain and simply if he runs to the level that allowed him to chase home Gallant Oscar at the Punchestown Festival, when he had the likes of Ballycasey, Rule The World and First Lieutenant all well beaten in behind, there’s no way the son of Beneficial should be a 25/1 poke.
