The Daily Mail's Sam Turner guides you through Wednesday's live TV action on the Knavesmire.
The colours of SPANISH SQUEEZE
(Best price 11-2) were carried to victory twice on the Knavesmire by Short Squeeze in recent seasons so it seems fair to assume the selection has been targeted at this race by connections. He has shown a good level of ability in his short career to date and Ryan Moore boasts an outstanding record when riding for Hugo Palmer. Moore’s figures on Palmer inmates read; 52211282221125122 and he has only finished out of the first two three times, partnering five to victory from 17 rides.
Spanish Squeeze hasn’t been given the opportunity to star on turf, but his opening appearance behind Consort reads well and he could well leave his mark behind in time.
Spanish Squeeze - 0.5pts e/w @ 11/2
Kevin Ryan has hit the woodwork a number of times in the Class 2 six furlong handicap in the last decade but he could end the agony courtesy of Flaming Spear or BOGART
(Best price 12-1) today. The former has the cheekpieces applied and drops in trip following a fine effort in a warm Newmarket handicap last time, while Bogart has become one of the best handicapped horses in training after a spell in the doldrums.
The latter is reported in good health again by his handler and is worth supporting at his double figure odds given he was a close up fifth in the race 12 months ago.
(Best price 50-1) looks a daft price given his York figures read 232 and his stable have their sprinters in good form.
Bogart - 0.5pts e/w @ 12/1
Love Island - 0.25pts e/w @ 50/1
(Best price 4-1) is reported to have put on weight and grown since last season so there is always a slight concern that he may not be fully wound up for this reappearance. However, he was only beaten once last term and that was at the hands of a champion sprinter in Muhaarar at Ascot last autumn which appears the best form on show here.If he is anywhere near straight then he could still take the world of beating and it’s worth remembering he comfortably accounted for Magical Memory when they met over course and distance last June.
Mattmu invariably goes well at York and could be some value given he is closely matched with the likely favourite. Trainer Tim Easterby has struck form with a vengeance in the past week and I could see his speedster posting a career best today.
Twilight Son - 1pt @ 4/1
SO MI DAR
(Best priced evens) can follow in the hoofprints of prestigious stable predecessors Star Of Seville, The Fugue and Joviality with victory in the Musidora Stakes this afternoon. In any other year, the daughter of Dubawi would be a strong fancy for the Epsom Oaks next month, but the likely presence of impressive 1000 Guineas heroine Minding has ensured John Gosden’s charge has gone under the radar a little. That may change today as So Mi Dar bids to build on her recent Epsom success which saw her lower the colours of the colts in the Investec Derby Trial.
Two of the vanquished, Humphrey Bogart and Viren’s Army, have both enhanced the form subsequently with victory in their respective Derby trials and the stage is set for the selection to retain her unbeaten record.
