Natural Scenery will top many shortlists given he has impressed on two recent starts at Newcastle (both races have worked out well). He is impossible to discount, but narrow preference is for the Ryan Moore-ridden COHESION (Best price 6-1) who posted a phenomenal speed figure at Wolverhampton last time and looks like the step up to two miles could find significant improvement. Trainer David Bridgewater was going to send his four-year-old over hurdles before he scored in style at Wolverhampton last time and the Midlands handler looks to have made a smart decision if his gelding’s Dunstall Park speed figure is taken on trust.

Muffri’Ha is equipped with the first-time cheekpieces and looks a significant danger if stall one isn’t an awkward berth to overcome. The headgear could serve to sharpen up William Haggas’ filly and she ran with great credit this winter in Dubai so could well make a bold bid from the front. She will probably be a tough horse to pass in the straight but ASHADIHAN (Best price 5-2) is likely to sit on her tail and could be ridden to pounce late on. The selection is 2-2 on a synthetic surface and her stable is just starting to find its feet after a sluggish start to the new campaign.

Unbeaten in both starts at the Surrey track, ROYAL BIRTH (Best price 8-1) could be a value punt to lift the All-Weather Sprint Final. The six-year-old is yet to win over six furlongs, but was never stronger than he was at the line when beating Lancelot Du Lac here last time after looking as though he was tapped for toe turning in and his effort over today’s trip at Ascot last September suggests he could actually improve for it.

Luck in running can play a major part in deciding results at this venue so ENNAADD (Best price 6-4) may need a little fortune from stall two, but he boasts plenty of tactical speed and he displayed at Kempton last November that he is a class horse in the making. Connections were talking of a tilt at the Guineas at this stage last season when he was beginning to thrive so he could be tough to beat if still improving and the evidence of his latest win suggests he is the real deal these days.

Second Thought and Sutter Country renew rivalries with the score at 2-0 to the former. In an ideal world Second Thought would prefer a seventh furlong or an all-out gallop as he arguably lacks the tactical speed of his old adversary and I can’t help thinking he may well trade at a significantly bigger price in the run than his morning odds suggest. One horse which should be well positioned is DUBAI ONE (Best price 9-2) who beat a battle-hardened group of handicappers at Wolverhampton last time in a swift time. She is likely to sit on the speed here and could well make a huge impact on this event.

Victory for CONVEY (Best price 15-8) could crown a red letter day for rider Ryan Moore who looks to hold a number of excellent chances throughout a terrific card. Moore may be as much use to a TV interviewer as an Easter egg to a diabetic, but he has already showcased his talents on a big day this season with a stunning hat-trick at Doncaster on the opening day of the campaign.

In Convey, Moore’s skills in the saddle could well be tested as his partner definitely takes some knowing and has displayed some quirks during a career which hasn’t delivered as much as it has promised. However, the selection got his act together in the Winter Derby to score cosily – his first run since being gelded – and he is unbeaten in two starts on a synthetic surface which suggests connections could well have exploited that angle a little better in a 14-race career.

Convey - 1pt @ 15/8

2.55 Newcastle

Inaam and MUTAMID (Best price 5-1) fought out the finish of a seven-furlong handicap here last month and, as it was the runner-up’s first run since July 2016, he is taken to reverse the placings with that outing behind him. The selection’s mark still looks feasible and he has assembled a very handy all-weather profile which suggests he should be on the scene if sitting close to the pace. A recent gelding operation could help concentrate his mind.

3.25 Newcastle

To Be Wild looked a class act in the making at Doncaster last term and could easily develop into a Cup horse this year if continuing to make giant strides this term. However, today could be the day to catch WILD HACKED (Best price 6-1) as he bumped into a smart horse at Kempton in the shape of Big Country and this stiffer track may play to his strengths. The time of his latest effort was pretty rapid and he may enjoy a fitness edge over To Be Wild on this occasion.

Events didn’t pan out for TAAMOL (Best price 7-2) at Doncaster on his second start but he had previously looked a colt of potential at Newmarket on soft ground and he is taken to vindicate that view with victory on his comeback. The selection is reported to have wintered well and impressed in his homework so is taken to put his career back on track with victory here. South Seas wound up the campaign finishing second in a Group 2 and looks the chief danger.
