With that in mind, Roger Varian’s son of Acclamation could be worth catching first time up off a mark of just 81 which appears lenient given Omran is down to run at Newbury tomorrow, rated 88. Varian’s team have struck form in the last seven days and Victory Angel coped with the fast ground well at Doncaster so today’s conditions should be no issue.

Last year’s winner Accession is respected as he bids to defend his crown, however ground conditions are markedly different this time round and preference is for the trail-blazing SALATEEN (Best price 3-1) who could be hard to peg back if getting free of the attentions of Tabarrak. The five-year-old was beautifully ridden by Ryan Moore in the AW Championships Mile, where only the last hundred yards found him out and he was overhauled late on by Sovereign Debt. The drop in trip and fast ground may help him to keep rolling today.

Antartica De Thaix will be a short price after landing three similar contests since the middle of February and will arguably take some beating if continuing to ascend the chasing ladder with experience. However, there is a small suspicion she may be a better horse on a flat track so at the prices this morning she is reluctantly overlooked in preference of the in-form MAGIC MONEY (Best price 4-1) who rallied gamely to lift the mares’ Challenger series final at Haydock over the weekend. The selection’s jumping has improved with each start over fences and she has struck up a useful alliance with Harry Bannister who is 2-3 aboard her. Briery Belle has tackled Might Bite and Whisper on her last two starts so is clearly worthy of respect back against her own sex.

BRANDO (Best price 6-4) won comfortably at Headquarters first time out last year and should take the beating if reproducing anywhere near the form which saw him placed in Group 1 company on his final start at Ascot. That performance in the Qipco Champions Sprint capped a fine year which saw him win the Ayr Gold Cup after finishing a narrow runner-up in the Wokingham and he looks to hold a class edge over his six rivals today. Quotes of around even money on a sprinter reappearing after a six-month absence with more important tests down the line won’t be for everyone and a small forecast with the progressive course and distance winner Kassia may offer more for the value seeker.

Whitecliffsofdover blew away his rivals in the Free Handicap yesterday so the market could prove a very telling tool when appraising the chances of stablemate War Decree in this event. Not seen since Goodwood in July, War Decree steps up to the mile for the first time and it will be fascinating to see how he copes with RIVET (Best price 3-1) and Larchmont Lad both of whom have valuable experience of the Dip. Rivet narrowly gains the nod as the seven furlongs of the Dewhurst when he was beaten by Churchill was an insufficient text for a horse that looks a galloper rather than a quickener. He corrected that wrong in the Racing Post Trophy and the vibes surrounding his chance are positive.
