BALLET CONCERTO (Best price 7-2) looks the typical late-maturing type which his handler thrives with and a 5lb rise for a smooth comeback win may not be enough to halt his progress with ground conditions likely to be favourable. The selection, which has always been thought capable of Pattern success by connections, saw out the mile strongly at Doncaster on his reappearance and should relish the step up to nine furlongs here. I was also tempted by the likes of Great Hall and Abareeq both of whom ran in a very strongly-run renewal of the City and Surburban Handicap at Epsom. However, although they could well outrun their prices, both could be vulnerable to an improver like Ballet Concerto.

This is a belting renewal and trainer Clive Cox looks to have one hand on the trophy with last year’s winner Profitable and recent Bath scorer Priceless giving the handler a strong hand. However, the former may not have been done many favours with the draw and Priceless has a lot more on her plate than when dismissing her own sex on her comeback so WASHINGTON DC (Best price 9-1) gains the vote. The Zoffany colt could make up into a star sprinter this year and it was encouraging that he managed to win on his return to Ireland at Navan over today’s trip. A brief trip to Meydan couldn’t have done him any harm and last year’s Commonwealth Cup third will no doubt have the Royal meeting on his agenda providing things go well in the interim. At the prices and with the ground on the fast side, I can’t resist a small saver on 2015 winner GOLDREAM (Best price 20-1) to enhance a track record which stands at two wins from three starts. The eight-year-old has also won a couple of times following a lengthy absence so looks overpriced.

SEVENTH HEAVEN (Best price 5-4) has found victories at the top level hard to come by since her victories in the Irish and Yorkshire Oaks last summer however a fine run at Meydan behind the talented Jack Hobbs augurs well for a bold show here. The selection may not have enjoyed the run of the race that day, but finished off strongly to suggest the fire still burns within and there doesn't appear anything of the quality of Jack Hobbs in opposition here. That said, Across The Stars always looked the type to improve as a four-year-old this summer and won't be a walkover for Seventh Heaven who is expected to progress significantly for her initial spin.

Recording a phenomenal speed figure just two weeks prior to a tilt at the 2000 Guineas may not be an ideal scenario, but BARNEY ROY (Best price 4-1) was reported to be in need of the outing at Newbury in the Greenham Stakes and he can be the one to trouble the seemingly formidable Churchill. The last named has been ante-post favourite for this race for nearly as long as his namesake smoked cigars, but he is far from a false market leader with his form boosted by a number of his Dewhurst Stakes adversaries that were left trailing in his wake last October. Churchill, a highly advanced and professional juvenile, is a difficult horse to take on as he has already proved track and ground are no issue and the only question mark to me eye is the capability of his rivals to ‘catch up’ with a horse that was physically superior last term. I don’t think there is any doubt that Barney Roy matches up to Churchill in terms of stature and he has been hugely impressive on both of his outings to date, both at Haydock and Newbury. He took the drop to seven furlongs in his stride on his comeback, lengthening impressively in the final two furlongs to devour Dream Castle’s lead and win with authority. If Richard Hannon's bull of a colt handles the Dip he must surely go close this afternoon.

Ajman Princess already has the form in the book to prove a tough filly to beat here, but DUBKA (Best price 10-3) made giant strides last season and looks the type to continue thriving. The selection worked her way through the grades in rapid fashion for her trainer who plotted her campaign perfectly, overseeing her graduation from a Chester maiden winner to a Newmarket handicap scorer off a mark of 91 in September. Her final outing at Bath in Listed company may have been one run too many, but she remains one to keep onside this summer.

This looks a handicap for the needy and greedy with the potential for the kind of trouble in running that would make Mary Decker proud. Zwayyan, a winner at Lingfield and Haydock, is a fair starting point as he looked the type to leave his mark behind this season and a gelding operation may help concentrate his mind and realise his potential. However, he is likely to be priced on colours and the power of his connections so the Amanda Perrett-trained duo Lightning Charlie and THE WARRIOR (Best price 16-1) make some appeal, albeit limited. The latter is marginally preferred as he hasn't enjoyed the best of luck in two course and distance starts and today's trip and a decent gallop look his optimum conditions.
