Consistency is not a word frequently used to describe MOUNT LOGAN (Best price 11-4) as the gelding is becoming increasingly difficult to predict as his career wears on. However, in the hope his record fresh is maintained then Roger Varian’s course lover could prove the answer here. Four runs after an absence of more than two months have yielded form figures of 1101 so the son of New Approach could be one to catch early at his favourite venue where his record stands at three wins from five starts.

Lightly-raced duo Horroob and Bless Him are probably still ahead of their respective marks and are respected, but TOP SCORE (Best price 8-1) was beaten less than four lengths by Churchill in the 2,000 Guineas despite beginning with his trademark sluggishness from the stalls. A tardy start can sometimes be a bonus at a track like Goodwood where an honest early pace can sometimes fall apart late on and, in the hope there is a genuine gallop to aim at, the Hard Spun colt looks a tasty price to rediscover the winning habit back in handicap company.

Wall Of Fire, my original fancy for this race is sadly a non runner, but DAL HARRAILD (Best price 6-1) may prove an able substitute and be most troublesome for likely favourite Frontiersman. The latter was extremely well backed before brushing aside a decent field at Newmarket on his comeback so could easily shrug off the 8lb rise for that cosy success. The four-year-old shaped like a stayer on a few occasions last year as he graduated through the grades and he should be sharper both mentally and physically for his Newbury comeback.

A race where confidence can only be minimal but HARRY HURRICANE (Best price 16-1) and EAST STREET REVUE (Best price 8-1) are a couple I like against the field. The former acquitted himself well in Dubai from the turn of the year and was quietly progressive last term where one of his two victories came at the expense of East Street Revue at Haydock. He also managed to win this race 12 months ago and boasts an excellent record fresh so the 100-day layoff is more a positive than a negative. East Street Revue arguably picks himself as his York stats read 218 and his record for Duran Fentiman is incredibly consistent (882114242824). I like his lower to middle draw too as he close to likely pace angles Caspian Prince and Copper Knight. 

MY REWARD (Best price 11-2) landed this event 12 months ago and looks to have a leading chance of repeating the achievement given he arrives on the back of a gritty front-running win at Ripon where he beat subsequent winner Sir Chauvelin. Talented rider David Allan looks to have preferred a trip to the north west ahead of York and that decision could be worth heeding. It was no negative to be handy at the track yesterday and any morning rain shouldn’t be an issue for connections.

Hughie Morrison won this event in 2011 with the talented Sagramor and PRIVATE MISSION (Best price 17-2) could make an impact following his impressive Leicester success. He was ridden aggressively that day and should appreciate this step up to a mile. Young rider Charlie Bennett went close at Goodwood on a Morrison handicapper yesterday and I’m hoping he sits pretty handy on the selection. In truth, it is a race where a host of the contenders could be fancied and Maths Prize, who drops in trip, is respected along with RUSUMAAT (Best price 14-1) who excelled when runner-up in a strongly-run Ascot affair last time. The latter looks well over priced given he was beaten by a potential star handicapper in Winning Ways at Ascot and the fifth has already won since. An eighth furlong may unlock more improvement. 

HARRY ANGEL (Best price 5-6) is arguably one of the most naturally talented horses in training at present if only he would learn to settle so that ability could be harnessed and his energy could be distributed efficiently. Clive Cox, who enjoyed an excellent day yesterday, has always eulogised about his son of Dark Angel who tanked his way through a warm Ascot event won by Blue Point last time before his early-race exertions took their toll late on. If that ring rustiness has been expunged by a reappearance run, he could be very difficult to beat this afternoon.

The participation of QUIET REFLECTION (Best price 5-1) in today’s Temple Stakes remains in doubt but, with morning thunderstorms forecast to hit the north west, conditions could transpire to be perfect for the daughter of Showcasing. Haydock have a history of producing easier ground than most tracks and some natural precipitation wouldn’t go amiss for a filly that is dropping from six furlongs to the minimum trip. There is always a slight concern that a race such as the Temple Stakes is being utilised as a stepping stone towards Royal Ascot, but Quiet Reflection’s record following a break in excess of seven weeks reads 111 so she clearly comes to hand well. With the possibility that Karl Burke’s filly may not run, I could see KACHY (Best price 8-1) improving on his run in this race 12 months ago when deep ground probably put paid to his chance.  He was only a length behind Quiet Reflection in the Commonwealth Cup despite hanging his chance away and his yard and rider were in great form here yesterday.
