Portugal v Mexico - Sunday 16:00, ITV4

Euro 2016 winners Portugal kick off their Confederations Cup campaign against 2015 CONCACAF Cup winners Mexico. The Mexicans were knocked out at the quarter-final stage of last year’s Copa América Centenario by eventual winners Chile but they won’t have to deal with the Chileans, nor indeed the favourites Germany until the knockout stages as this’ll be their toughest assignment in the group stages.

Portugal proved excellent exponents of tournament football in the Euros, in fact winning only one game at the entire tournament in the 90 minutes. Whilst they’ve won their qualifiers against slightly lesser sides fairly comfortably since their triumph in France, they have lost a couple of times, against Switzerland and in a friendly against Sweden. With that in mind, we’re not keen on backing them at around 2.1 given their strong draw tendency.

Mexico are a tough side to beat as they’ve lost only two of their last 36 games and give we expect both these sides to qualify from the group, this could be a cagey affair in the opener. Mexico have also lost just one of their last eight games against sides we have ranked in the world’s top-15 (Portugal are 10th), but since they drew half of these, we’re going to take a chance on the draw.

Draw - 1pt @ 3.3
