With a good record fresh and having slipped to within 1lb of his last winning rating, GULF OF POETS is taken to make a winning return to action for Mick Easterby. He found 7f on the sharp side when fifth here in November but will relish the return to his optimum distance. Dawaaleeb won first time out last year and makes some appeal on his Redcar second in October, while Exec Chef is afforded plenty of respect with James Doyle getting the leg up. He stays 1m2f, so a well-run mile contest could bring his stamina into play late on. Penalised all-weather winners Rampant Lion and Fayez are others worth noting, particularly the former, who has the assistance of Silvestre De Sousa in the saddle.

Roger Varian has won two of the last three renewals of this contest with Belardo (2016) and Zabeel Prince (2018) and has another live chance with SHARJA BRIDGE this time around. The selection ended last season by landing the valuable Balmoral Handicap at Ascot on Champions Day and looks ready for another crack at Listed company. Remarkable showed progressive handicap form for John Gosden in 2017 and is worth a market check now debuting for a new stable on his belated return to action, while Circus Couture makes some appeal on his placed efforts in the Royal Hunt Cup and in a Haydock Group 3 last season.

Godolphin runner AUXERRE is potentially well treated off a mark of 100 on his return to action and will likely prove a warm order with James Doyle booked. There are dangers aplenty, though. Ripp Orf was a pillar of consistency in top 7f handicaps last term but he did fail to justify favouritism when running below par here in October. Humbert and Kynren were second and third respectively in last year's Spring Mile and have viable claims. The former debuts for David O'Meara, who has sent out one winner and five placed runners in the last five runnings of this race. Other stable switchers to consider are Irish raider Saltonstall, who debuts for Ado McGuinness, and South Seas, who has joined a thriving Phil Kirby team. Aquarium caught the eye when finishing strongly from off the pace in the Lincoln Trial won by Zwayyan at Wolverhampton and commands respect with match fitness on his side. The latter comment is also applicable to Chiefofchiefs, who came up short in the Winter Derby but will appreciate the return to handicap company.

The market should be the best guide to expectations but the nod goes to BIRKENHEAD, who represents the yard who won this race 12 months ago. The son of Captain Gerrard is a half-brother to a couple of early-season juvenile winners and he should be one of the more sharper types in the field. Show Me Show Me is closely related to the high-class juvenile Toocoolforschool and he is the pick of Richard Fahey's pair. Bill Turner has won this contest a couple of times in the last 10 years which means that Hell Of A Joker merits consideration. Coast Of Dubai, Walton Thorns and Zulu Zander are others who warrant a place on the shortlist.

BANGKOK displayed plenty of promise in three starts as a juvenile and that includes a narrow defeat to the potentially high-class Sangarius on his debut. Allocator, Dubai Instinct and Ironclad are others with valid form claims but the main threat to the selection may prove to be one of the well-bred newcomers in the field. Just You Wait is a half-brother to the dual Group 1 winner and top sire Teofilo, while his full-sister Poetic Charm has won two Group 2 contests at Meydan in recent months. Telecaster is the second foal out of Shirocco Star, who was placed in both the Oaks and the Irish equivalent, and he was a buy-back at 180,000gns as a yearling. Others who could go well despite their lack of experience are Frequency Code and Noble Music.

In a tricky race to close the card the marginal preference is for ANDOK, who arrives here 1lb lower than his last winning mark and that success came over this C&D back in August. Dark Devil, who is a stablemate of the selection, is not the most prolific of winners but he is more than capable of running well in a race of this nature. Others to consider are Consultant, Kannapolis and The Night King.
