UK Horse Racing Tips: Chester

COLD STARE ended his 2018 campaign with a very respectable second-placed finish at Doncaster in November and he could be very hard to beat if reproducing that form this afternoon. Ptarmigan Ridge is an obvious threat to the selection having finished in front of him at Haydock a couple of weeks ago. Shady Mccoy is on a workable mark based on the pick of his form, while Mazyoun and Calder Prince also merit consideration.

Matterhorn was in outstanding form on the all-weather over the winter but he does have to prove that he can transfer that level of ability to the turf today. With that in mind, the preference is for ADDEYBB, who is a proven performer on soft ground and he won the Lincoln and a Group 2 over a mile last year. The step back up in trip should not be a problem and he may even improve for it. Last year's winner Forest Ranger should not be underestimated, while Success Days is another who should relish the likely soft ground.

Despite having to carry top weight the preference is for RESTORER, who won this race last year. The seven-year-old went on to win again at Leicester in October and his subsequent performances suggest that he remains on a workable mark. Third Time Lucky has a good record on soft ground and it would be no surprise to see him go well today. The shortlist is completed by Aasheq, Aquarium and Frankuus.

CLEONTE caught the eye when finishing third in the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot earlier in the month and he arrives here 4lb well in today, having been reassessed for that run. The son of Sir Percy likes soft ground and he is proven over the trip having made the frame in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket last year. Low Sun won that contest but his chances have not been helped by drawing stall 17 today. Austrian School is a consistent performer and he could give the selection the most to think about having won easily at Musselburgh three weeks ago. Others to consider are Montaly, Shabeeb and Who Dares Wins.
