Three of his rivals made pleasing debuts, though, not least Kemble, who chased home the Queen Mary favourite and a subsequent winner at Newmarket. Illusionist stuck to his guns well when runner-up at Lingfield, and Southwell third Constitutional will be winning races at the right level too.

Second Collection has enjoyed an excellent start to the year on the all-weather, whereas Belated Breath hasn't been seen since the autumn but rounded out 2018 on a high, winning two of her last three. Heritage shaped well on her handicap debut to make the frame at Salisbury and should come on from it, but SCINTILATING was twice tried in Group 3 company after her maiden triumph and although she came up short on both occasions, a mark of 89 is tempting.

Bye Bye Hong Kong ended Aidan O'Brien's Kentucky Derby dream for another year when accounting for a couple of Ballydoyle inmates at Chemsford, but three-year-olds don't have a good record in this. Oh This Is Us was touched off by just a neck 12 months ago but was behind MITCHUM SWAGGER in the bet365 Mile at Sandown recently and given that was Ralph Beckett's gelding's first run of the season, he should confirm his superiority. Three-time Group 2 winner Breton Rock looked like age was catching up with him as last year went on.

Some interesting newcomers to the handicap ranks do battle here and although Gabriela Laura has taken minor honours on the Polytrack on her last couple of appearances, PEMPIE might be better treated. Andrew Balding's filly didn't have the turn of foot to get involved at the business end of a 7f maiden at the Craven meeting, but she still shaped with promise and will appreciate the extra furlong. Shamkha is another who should build on her novice form, while Dancing Jo can't be ruled out either.

GEIZY TEIZY gave connections plenty to look forward to when a staying-on fourth over 1m on her Yarmouth introduction towards the back end of last season. There is plenty of stamina in the daughter of Lawman's pedigree, so this looks an ideal distance to start her back over. Song Without End was disappointing on her Wolverhampton comeback but can't be written off just yet. There will be more to come from Skerryvore and Mojave as well, with Pecorino possibly the pick of the newcomers.

SIMOON was consistent without managing to get his head in front for Ed Walker last season, but the return to the Andrew Balding stable did the trick because he made a triumphant start to the new campaign at Chelmsford and appears set for a profitable 2019. Narjes has already proven a good moneyspinner this year and should give the selection plenty to think about. Unit of Assessment took a step back in the direction at Doncaster, and Balmoral Castle goes well here so enters the reckoning too.
