Mercenary Rose was more competitive than her return in the Nell Gwyn at Newmarket when second at Windsor on her latest start. She has to enter the reckoning on handicap debut, while Bath scorer Roys Dream (was also engaged to run at Hamilton on Thursday evening) cannot be discounted off a 2lb higher mark.

ENCORE D'OR returns to the scene of his latest career success and arrives on the back of a solid effort when third at Chelmsford. He has been dropped 1lb by the handicapper subsequently and could prove too strong for this opposition. Tarboosh is currently in excellent form, finishing third in Listed company at Haydock last time, and has every chance if translating that sort of performance to the all-weather. Last year's winner Copper Knight, Foolaad and Makanah add further spice to a competitive event.

NYALETI was not disgraced over 1m at Royal Ascot last week and the step back up in trip should not be a problem, given that she was second in an Italian Group 1 over this distance last November. The four-year-old sets the standard in this contest and she should not be underestimated. It was not the strongest of Group 2 races that Glance finished third in last time but that is still good form in the context of this event. Sun Maiden appears to be progressive and arrives here on the back of a Listed win at Nottingham.

GRANITE CITY DOC returned to winning ways over C&D a few weeks ago and a 4lb rise in the ratings for that success may not be enough to stop him from taking this contest as well. Glorious Jem (was also engaged to run at Leicester on Thursday) has displayed promise in all three previous starts and warrants respect on his handicap debut, while Autretot and Elixsoft complete the shortlist.

TURJOMAAN was an easy winner over this course and distance when last seen in October and looks poised to strike again for Roger Varian. Disqualified when first past the post at Ascot last September, the three-year-old has plenty of scope for improvement, and his form reads well. Double Honour caught the eye when fourth on debut behind subsequent German 2000 Guineas winner Fox Champion and followed that up with an impressive second at Doncaster a couple of months later, while Gometra Ginty could prove best of the remainder.

GLEEFUL has been a model of consistency so far this season for Roger Varian and has been nicely placed here to try and claim an overdue success. The Cheveley Park-owned filly needs to be delivered right on the line and should appreciate being back under the guidance of Andrea Atzeni. Mutabaahy isn't always the best away from the stalls but should be finishing as well as anything, while Fairy Stories and Decision Maker are other names to take seriously.
