Blackcurrent was a superb second at Southwell on his return but struggled at the Nottinghamshire track on Thursday, while Penwood has shown brief flashes of ability and wears blinkers for the first time.

CHARLIE D didn't appear to settle properly when upped to 2m here on his penultimate outing but he appreciated the return to this shorter trip when winning at Bath last time and could feasibly defy a 3lb rise to follow up. Australis is rated 3lb higher than when scoring over the extended 1m5f at Chelmsford last time and should remain competitive over this slightly longer trip. The consistent Houlton looks best of the rest.

Glenties is entitled to build on a solid debut second at Newcastle earlier in the month and can fight it out with Pot Of Paint, who should be all the wiser for the experience gained on debut at York, for the silver medal.

Universal Effect has been running with credit this summer and is interesting on his first outing for Mark Loughnane, while course-and-distance winner Mac Jetes now switches to the handicap ranks looking to make it back-to-back track victories.
