UK Horse Racing Tips: Doncaster

PAGERO took a while to warm to his task once sent handicapping, but he burst into life at Huntingdon last weekend. That came over two and a half miles but such was the ease of the victory, it is difficult to imagine the drop in distance will stop him from following up off the same mark. Carry On has progressed in the novice ranks, but perhaps fellow handicap newcomer George Ridsdale can present the sterner challenge.

Blakeney Point and Borodin are rated in the 90s on the level so are interesting recruits to the winter game. They will need to be polished in the jumping department if they are to get to grips with LOGAN ROCKS, though, because Amy Murphy's gelding created a smart impression when making a successful hurdling debut at Huntingdon. Perfect Predator was beaten a long way at odds-on in that contest, but surely it was too bad to be true.

SKY PIRATE held his own in the Kim Muir last season and after returning with a Wetherby spill, he went some way to putting it behind him when beating all bar Flying Angel at Ascot. The handicapper has probably taken a chance in keeping him on the same rating and he can see off Barton Knoll, who was an encouraging fourth on his Newbury comeback. Storm Control improved from his own return to fill the runner-up berth at Wetherby and could step forward again.

Scarlet Dragon wasn't disgraced in what used to be the Gerry Feilden and he remains on a handy mark in this sphere. Speed Company couldn't get competitive at Ascot, but his previous Chepstow defeat of Quoi De Neuf reads well. Faro De Kerser is interesting on his handicap debut but a chance is taken on BLU CAVALIER, who has been campaigned in Grade 2 company since taking third off this figure in the rearranged Betfair Hurdle back in February.

Sam Spinner hasn't put a foot wrong since switching to fences and the seven-year-old, who has been a Grade 1 regular over hurdles in recent seasons, sets a good standard. However, WINDSOR AVENUE looks a top-class staying chaser in the making and has the opportunity to announce himself to a wider audience in this Grade 2 contest. He has won by a combined 33 lengths in his two chasing appearances so far and is held in the highest regard by handler Brian Ellison. Aye Right is a useful hurdler, but this is a tough place to start life over the larger obstacles and he might have to settle for third.

Nicky Henderson won this race in both 2014 and 2017 with some high-class juveniles for owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede and those connections appear to have a leading contender once again in TOMBEE DU CIEL, who makes her stable debut for the Seven Barrows handler following 231 days off the track. She brings some smart form from France to the table and placed in a Listed contest when last sighted. Navajo Pass was denied in the dying strides when looking for back-to-back victories at Newcastle and another bold bid is expected, while not much separated Fontwell winner Paseo and Prefontaine when they fought out the finish at Kempton in October and they could do battle once again, this time for minor money.

CLOTH CAP ran a big race to finish third in a competitive handicap at Ascot last month and this dour stayer is fancied to prove too strong under Richie McLernon. Third in the Scottish National in April, the seven-year-old is still improving and won't mind whichever way the ground goes. My Old Gold wasn't disgraced in Listed company on her reappearance at Carlisle six weeks ago, while Forth Bridge is fancied to prove best of the remaining pair.
