UK Horse Racing Tips: Newmarket

Venturous, Restless Rose and Royal Birth have all been in good form on the all-weather this year, but maybe APLOMB can make a successful return to action. William Haggas' sprinter signed off 2019 with an expensive York failure in October, but he had been on the go since April and developed into a smart handicapper during the summer. Count D'Orsay has more than paid his way since joining Tim Easterby, who has another lively player in Copper Knight.

This isn't the strongest Palace House ever run so MAJOR JUMBO may not need to better last year's effort to land the spoils. Kevin Ryan's speedster was a two-length third behind Mabs Cross, after which he acquitted himself well in a host of top sprints, and he has won fresh in the past. Judicial, only seventh in 2019 but runner-up the year before, should make his presence felt again. Even more is expected of Shades Of Blue and Queens Gift this campaign, and Well Done Fox is interesting on his return from a year off.

Godolphin hold a strong hand and although Magic Lily should have fitness on her side after an excellent Meydan campaign that culminated with a second in the Jebel Hatta, she will do well to successfully concede 3lb to TEREBELLUM. The lightly-raced daughter of Sea The Stars won a French Group 2 stylishly before her close-up fifth in the Prix de l'Opera - a performance that may have swayed connections to keep her in training with a view to getting a Group 1 triumph on her CV. The team behind Queen Power probably have similar aspirations and she completes a select shortlist.

WALDKONIG, a 600,000gns half-brother to Arc hero Waldgeist, made a massive impression with a nine-length demolition job on his Wolverhampton debut in December. The son of Kingman is currently as low as 9/1 for the Derby and he is fancied to show his Classic potential. Al Aasy isn't much bigger for the Epsom showpiece and he went into plenty of notebooks when a staying-on third in a back-end novice event over 7f here. The selection's stablemates Mishriff and Cherokee Trail had a crack at the Saudi Derby earlier in the year, with the former faring much better in second.

PINATUBO had an outstanding unbeaten juvenile season in 2019 which ended with a two-length defeat of Arizona in the Dewhurst here in October. That performance may have been a little bit underwhelming, given how easily he won the National Stakes, but soft ground would not have helped and he still managed to earn a decisive victory. The son of the late Shamardal does need to prove that he has trained on but there is no reason to believe that he hasn't. The aforementioned Arizona has been the focus of some very positive rumours coming out of Ballydoyle and he remains the main threat to the selection based on all known form. Kameko won the Vertem Futurity on his final start at two but will need to improve upon his previous turf form to trouble the principals this afternoon. Al Suhail and Military March should be watched with an eye on the Derby, while Dewhurst third Wichita could go well at an each-way price.

MONTATHAM, who made a winning seasonal debut in 2019, remains unexposed and his performances at the back end of last year suggest that he should be capable of winning off his current mark. Jalaad has a similar profile to the selection and the son of Kodiac should not be underestimated this afternoon. Ambassadorial was in good form on the dirt at Meydan earlier in the year but he is yet to show his best form on the turf. Others to note are Alfred Boucher, Loch Ness Monster and Nonios.

NAHAARR is four wins from five career starts, all of them coming last year, and William Haggas' charge has a nice profile for this race as there should be more to come from him as a four-year-old. The Dark Angel colt seemingly goes on any ground and has a nice weight going up against horses which are much more exposed. Qaysar was the horse who beat the selection in August last year and won a couple of times subsequently, but he could only finish midfield off this career-high mark at Ascot last time. Sir Maximilian is an admirable veteran and he completes the shortlist.

LAZULI was unable to land a telling blow in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at the back end of last year, but he looked a smart juvenile at HQ and Doncaster prior to that and definitely has a handicap of this nature within his compass. Charlie Appleby can ready one after a break and wind surgery may have unlocked a fair chunk of improvement in him this year. At the other end of the weights, King Ragnar is unexposed for Roger Varian and impressed at Newcastle in November, while Smokey Bear and Endowed should also show up well.

Sir Michael Stoute's string appear to be in good form so Calculation, who was progressive last year, must be considered closely. The son of Dubawi probably wants further than this trip, though, so DEJA is preferred back on grass after his slightly disappointing effort when last seen at Newcastle. He wasn't beaten far on that occasion, but is surely better than that showing and is unexposed on turf. Rock Eagle is another to take seriously.
