UK Horse Racing Tips: Beverley

BOMB PROOF hasn't been seen since making a sparkling debut at York over a year ago, but that form is really strong. The runner-up finished fourth in the National Stakes, with the third making the frame in the Middle Park before winning the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy, so James Fanshawe's new recruit can be fancied to defy the absence. If fitness is an issue, Araifjan may be the one to take advantage, although Silver Sniper also warrants attention.

The penny has suddenly dropped for BAL MAL this year, with John Quinn's sprinter occupying the runner-up berth at Kempton and Chelmsford, either side of a Wolverhampton win. Interestingly, that victory was the only time he has tackled the minimum trip before and he will take plenty of beating. Harbour Point's handicap debut second at Windsor was a big step in the right direction, as was Superiority's runner-up finish at Newcastle. Better is expected from Alioski and Stone Princess now that they venture out of maiden/novice company.

Thanks to the promise he showed on his Newcastle introduction, AIRFLOW was sent off favourite at Pontefract but had to settle for third. He plugged on at the one pace so the extra yardage is expected to suit, and he can make it third-time lucky. Deep Impression should know more about what is expected of her following her debut at the West Yorkshire circuit, although she has ground to make up on Lucy Rules. Lady Bond might be the pick of the newcomers.

There would be no more deserving winner than Velma, who has gone agonisingly close at Newcastle and over this C&D, but she may have to settle for another supporting role behind PERFECT ROSE. Mark Johnston's filly displayed plenty of potential as an early juvenile and even though she has been sidelined for some time, she could be well treated. Falconidae and Alix James both finished third on their return and have more to offer, while Le Chiffre was behind Alix James on his final outing of 2019 but has been gelded since and now gets weight.

MANZO DURO was gelded during his winter break and showed the benefit of it when touched off at Doncaster. David O'Meara turns him out again before his mark can be revised and the decision can be rewarded. Velma's run in the previous race will provide a guide to the chances of Old Harbour, who pipped that one over C&D but has been hit with a 7lb rise. There should be more to come from Manaabit, Spiritofthenorth and Business.

John Gosden doesn't send too many to Beverley so the hint must be taken with LIGHTNESS, who was third in a Wolverhampton race won by Sandringham runner-up Waliyak on debut and went one better on her return to the fray at Kempton. There should be plenty more to come from the daughter of Shamardal, but Golden Pass made a cracking start to her career in a Newmarket event that has worked out well so has to be considered a big danger. The well-bred Queen's Favour might be the one for third.

COLONY QUEEN was successful in two of her final three starts of last season and picked up where she left off on her return to action at Newcastle. The resolution she showed on that occasion will stand her in good stead again and she can defy a 3lb rise. Knowing was another to end 2019 on a high, although she didn't fire on her return. Better is expected, and Northern Lyte should also step forward now last week's reappearance here is under his belt.

Contrast completed a Yarmouth/Lingfield brace as summer turned to autumn last year, and those exertions may have taken their toll because he failed on his only subsequent start. He is fresh from his break but is passed over in favour of TRAVELLER, who made a pleasing return to turf when third at Redcar last week and will relish the step up from 7f. Our Charlie Brown made a good start to life with Adrian Keatley and is another to consider.

VAMPISH numbered Majeste and Flower Power among her victims when springing a 20/1 surprise on her first appearance for Ron Thompson over track and trip recently. The assessor has hit back with just a 2lb rise so she is taken to follow up. Majeste only has a couple of lengths to find, although the chief threat looks to be Zabeel Star, who was a decent second over an extended 2m at Newcastle.
