Hala Hala Athmani is a respected newcomer from the Kevin Ryan stable but preference instead goes to the proven form of the Ed Bethell trained ROUND ACRE (best priced at 2-1). The daughter of Garswood stepped forward from her debut 5th at Ripon to finish a close second at Leicester when nearly making all under Jason Watson. The form of that race is working out well with the third Femme Friendly winning by three lengths on her next start at Windsor and the fourth Minnamoolka winning at Bath on her next start by nearly two lengths so a repeat of that run should see Round Acre go close.
Mambo Beauty has moved from Ken Condon to David O’Meara since her last run in May but this drop back down in trip on faster ground is a question mark so preference goes to the proven recent form of Round Acre who should get off the mark at her third attempt.
15:35 York
Despite having to concede weight to all bar the outsider in this race, the John & Thady Gosden trained MISHRIFF (best priced at 7-4) should prove hard to beat in this race. The son of Make Believe was extremely progressive last season winning the Prix Du Jockey Club and won both the valuable Saudi Cup and Dubai Sheema Classic earlier this season. He can be forgiven his 3rd placed finish in the Coral Eclipse as he just appeared to lack for fitness following a break after his international exploits and put in arguably a career best when 2nd in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes last time. The four-year-old finished ahead of the reopposing Love that day and I expect him to confirm form with that rival whose Royal Ascot win is working out terribly on form since.
The three-year-olds all face question marks coming into this race; Mohaafeth appeared to be beaten fair and square over this course and distance in a Group 2 last month, Alcohol Free will need to settle better on her first attempt over this trip, Alenquer would have question marks dropping back down from 1m4f to 1m2f and Mac Swiney would prefer softer ground.
Mishriff will appreciate the drop back to 1m2f from 1m4f in the King George last time and I expect him to win this in impressive style.
16:10 York
The top weight MAKAWEE (best priced at 25-1) has been slightly disappointing on her previous two starts but is interesting dropping back down into a handicap for the first time since September last year. The David O’Meara trained mare won over 1m6f at Goodwood off a mark of 100 that day so this mark of 101 shouldn’t be out of reach for her. Following that victory, she finished a short head behind Alpinista in a listed race at Goodwood over 1m4f before two 3rd placed finishes at York at Group 3 and listed level.
Makawee went off too quickly last time at Goodwood behind Wonderful Tonight but the long straight at York should really suit her running style. Danny Tudhope instead rides Get Shirty on his stable debut so he is respected but I much prefer the proven form of Makawee who will appreciate the return to handicap company.
