The James Fanshawe trained Audarya (best priced at 6/1) won this race last season and should hold strong claims of a repeat victory in it this year. She went on to finish 3rd behind Tarnawa and Alpine Star in the Prix de l’Opera on her next start when beaten less than a length before winning the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf on her final start last season.
The five-year-old ran well to finish 2nd in the Prince Of Wales’ Stakes at Royal Ascot on her reappearance behind Love before disappointing in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood last time. Her trainer could offer no reason for her below par performance but if she returns to her best in this race then she should be able to reverse form with Lady Bowthorpe. Ioritz Mendizabal gets on well with Audarya and she is expected to run well under conditions which will suit.
Connections will be disappointed that Raabihah (best priced at 7-4) has been beaten on all three of her starts this season but she should prove hard to beat back at 1m4f. The four-year-old finished 2nd behind Tarnawa in the Prix Vermeille last season before finishing a close 5th in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on her final start last season. She has finished 2nd on all three of her starts this season but those have been over 1m2f and 1m1f and she will appreciate the step back up to 1m4f in this race.
Raabihah receives weight from her main market rival Valia in this race and she should prove hard to beat under Cristian Demuro.
The Richard Hughes trained Nelson Gay (best priced at 11/1) has put in his two best performances at Sandown and he looks worth taking a chance on back over this course and distance. He was an impressive 6 ½ length winner earlier this season off a mark of 82 before finishing 5th in the Scurry Stakes in June when beaten less than four lengths.
The three-year-old has finished well beaten in handicaps at Ascot and Goodwood on his previous two starts but they have been off marks of 91 and 90, and the handicapper has now dropped him 3lb down to a mark of 87. Connections fit the gelding in a first time hood and he should run well with up to five places on offer.
