This looks like a wide open contest and I am taking a chance on the Ralph Beckett trained Electress (best priced at 11/2) to improve from her debut effort. The well bred daughter of Galileo and Irish 1000 Guineas winner Just The Judge could only finish 7th on her debut at Newbury but it was a run that was full of promise.

Electress was slowly away and ran green when asked for her effort in the 7f contest before staying on well to take 7th late on under hands and heels. The form hasn’t really been tested from the race but the fourth Unilateralism finished 2nd on his next start and the ninth finished 3rd in that same contest so it shouldn’t be discounted. Oisin Murphy now takes over from Rossa Ryan on the filly and she is expected to be better suited by the step up to a mile in this maiden stakes.

Electress - 0.5pts e/w @ 11/2

Connections of Calm Skies (best priced at 9/4) will have been disappointed that she hasn’t got off the mark on her previous three starts but she should now hold strong claims on her handicap debut dropped to 6f for the first time. The daughter of Shamardal finished 2nd behind current 1000 Guineas favourite Inspiral on her debut before finishing 2nd over that same course and distance at Newmarket over 7f on her next start. Calm Skies was again a beaten favourite last time over 7f when she weakened into 3rd late on as a result of racing too keen in the early stages of the race.

Calm Skies now makes her handicap debut off a mark of 82 in this race and her running style should be well suited by the demands of this 6f contest. The Charlie Appleby yard continue in good form (41 % strike rate in the last two weeks) and I expect Calm Skies to get off the mark on her fourth attempt.

Calm Skies - 1pt @ 9/4

Course and distance winners Themaxwecan and Just Hubert (best priced at 9/4) dominate the market for this contest and preference goes to the latter who arrives here in the better form. The William Muir and Chris Grassick trained gelding has won twice at Goodwood in his career off marks of 88 and 90 and also finished 2nd in this race last season off a mark of 92. The five-year-old arrives here having won his previous two races at both Ascot and Goodwood and should hold strong claims off a mark of 93.

Themaxwecan arrives here with form figures of 00087 so I much prefer the chances of Just Hubert and I expect him to go one better than last year.

Just Hubert - 1pt @ 9/4
