The John & Thady Gosden trained Mostahdaf (best priced at 9/4) lost his unbeaten record in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot but should get back to winning ways dropped down in class to this listed race. The son of Frankel is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Nazeef and he won his first two starts on the AW at Newcastle and Kempton earlier this year.
Mostahaf coped well with the soft ground when victorious over this course and distance in the Heron Stakes earlier this season when he beat Highland Avenue by ½ length. He was making good headway last time at Royal Ascot when making a daring move up against the far rail but got blocked and lost all chance and eventually finished 12th. Connections have given him plenty of time following that run and he is expected to win this on his return from 92 days off the track.
15:50 Yarmouth
The Lucy Wadham trained Sienna Breeze (best priced at 18/1) ran better than her odds of 66/1 suggested at both Yarmouth and Newmarket in maidens when she finished 4th and 5th respectively and should hold strong claims in this 0-70 handicap. The daughter of Camacho bounced back from a disappointing handicap debut to win at Nottingham on her penultimate start when returned to novice company.
The handicapper raised Sienna Breeze 1lb for that victory up to a mark of 71 where she finished 7th at Newmarket under William Buick despite being sent off 7/2 joint favourite. Connections now fit Sienna Breeze with first time cheekpieces which should help and she should run well towards the top of the weights with up to five places on offer.
16:20 Yarmouth
There is only a small field of six for this race and I feel that will suit Castana Dia (best priced at 4/1) who has won twice already this season over this course and distance in similar conditions. The Chris Wall trained three-year-old won a maiden on her reappearance by a neck before finishing a head behind Mummy Bear at Newmarket on her handicap debut. That run came off an opening handicap mark of 71 and she defied a 2lb rise to win over this course and distance under Sebastian Woods in July.
The handicapper raised Castana Dia 3lb for that victory and she ran well off that mark to finish 2nd by ¾ length last time over this course and distance. She again has to defy a 3lb rise but she was unlucky not to have won last time as she was bumped by the eventual winner and I expect her to prove hard to beat.
