The Nick Gifford trained The Mighty Don (best priced at 9/1) won a competitive novice chase at this meeting last season and should hold strong claims in this race off a mark of 141. The experienced nine-year-old beat Enrilo on his reappearance here last season before running well behind the 157 rated Happygolucky on his next start off level weights.

The Mighty Don outran odds of 40/1 to finish 6th in the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival before putting in another good effort at Cheltenham on his final start last season when James Davies lost his irons approaching the last fence. The Mighty Don won on his reappearance last season so we know he goes well fresh and he should run well with four places on offer.

Aidan O’Brien has won the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes five times out of the last eight years and I am quite surprised that Glounthaune (best priced at 14/1) is such a big price for this race. The son of Kodiac made a winning debut at the Curragh in April over 6f and the form of that race is working out well with the 2nd Castle Star winning his next two starts and finishing only ½ length behind Perfect Power in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes.

Glounthaune has been off the track 175 days since his debut win but stablemate Tenebrism won the Cheveley Park Stakes following a similar absence and won at an SP of 14/1. Native Trail obviously sets the standard following his win in the National Stakes last time but hopefully the eight runners remain and I make him a confident each way selection.

Glounthaune - 0.5pts e/w @ 14/1

The David O’Meara trained Gulliver (best priced at 10/1) has won this race for the previous two seasons and should hold strong claims of completing the hat-trick. The seven-year-old won this race in 2019 off a mark of 100 following 3rd placed finishes at both the Curragh and Ayr before winning it again last year off a mark of 102 following 11th placed finishes at both the Curragh and Ayr.

Gulliver has had the same prep again this year at the Curragh (4th) and Ayr (13th) and runs in the race off the same mark as last year (102). He ran well to finish a neck 2nd in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood earlier this season so we know he retains all of his old ability and he should run well with up to seven places available.

Gulliver - 0.5pts e/w @ 10/1
