The Gavin Cromwell trained ARVENE (best priced at 25/1) looks a huge price for this handicap chase if benefitting from first-time blinkers. The seven-year-old has uninspiring form figures of PP90P since his previous win over fences but it is interesting that victory came in first-time cheekpieces off a mark of 112.
Arverne was well supported into 6/4f that day and he has since plummeted in the weights down to a mark of 102 with his previous three runs coming without any headgear fitted. He drops into this 0-109 handicap chase in first-time blinkers and could outrun his huge odds.

Last year’s winner MIRANDA (best priced at 10/11) should prove hard to beat in this race if running up to her official rating of 146. The mare only won a nose in a mares’ handicap hurdle last time but she lost between 15/20 lengths at the start before showing a good attitude to win at the finish.

The 2nd Voice Of Calm has boosted that form since with a four-length victory at Newbury on her next start and Miranda should prove hard to beat if getting away on terms in this Grade 2. Western Victory is her closest rival on ratings but disappointed on her stable debut a week ago and it could be down to Anna Bunina to follow the selection home.

Only five runners have been declared for the Cotswold Chase but it looks like an interesting race. Chantry House looks a short price following his below-par effort in the King George last time and it is quite concerning that connections fit him with first-time cheekpieces in this race. Preference instead goes to AYE RIGHT (best priced at 11/2) who is only rated 1lb below the favourite on official ratings and comes here following a victory in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle last time.

Aye Right has performed well at Cheltenham in the past with a 5th placed finish in the RSA Chase behind the likes of Champ, Minella Indo and Allaho before finishing 3rd in the Ultima Handicap Chase last season off a mark of 154. Simply The Betts has stamina doubts, Santini has question marks about his recent form and Kauto Riko has over a stone to find at the weights so Aye Right looks the solid alternative against the favourite.

DEMACHINE (best priced at 7/1) was a selection for the column earlier this month when he unseated Richard Patrick at the first fence but I am hoping he can bounce back in this race. He looks well handicapped off a mark of 140 based on his run in the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot where he split the 145 rated pair Remastered and Kalooki.

The Kerry Lee trained eight-year-old ran well to finish 5th in the Ladbrokes Trophy last time and the handicapper has actually dropped him 2lbs for that which seems very generous and he should run well with up to six places on offer.
