Given the way WAVECREST won at Hereford last time I’ll be surprised if a 9lb rise is enough to stop him going in again here. I know it took him a while to get his head in front but he remains unexposed over fences and there should be a fair bit more to come yet. He was strongest at the line last time so I think Tom Buckley will be keen to draw his stamina out again and might even press the leaders if the decide to dawdle early. Aeronisi is the likely danger to the favourite as he did improve to finish third at Taunton where he was only beaten a length. He has since changed yards but it still early days so he should keep the selection honest. Twenty Twenty isn’t showing enough to upset these for me and the rest all have enough to prove including Nessfield Blue in first-time cheekpieces.

With just the five starts under Rules the best should be yet to come with STORM OF LIGHT. He looked a promising horse winning over 2 and a half here in November and while he has been beaten twice since he was never really put in the race up to this trip at Market Rasen and I think he is much better than what he showed on that occasion. Back at this venue and 2lb lower he should go very close. River Legend looks a work in progress and ran his best race to date when third at Chepstow. This step up in trip on handicap debut could see him emerge as the main danger to the selection. Apple Rock fell early on at Southwell but would have a squeak if back to somewhere near his best. His third at Hereford last month wasn’t a bad effort but he still has it to prove up to this sort of trip again.
