Top weight Captain Ivan is respected in first time cheekpieces but preference instead goes to Atlantic Storm (best priced at 15/8) who ran better than could be expected with a slipping saddle last time. The Rob Summers trained ten-year-old has form figures of 132 at Southwell in his career including a 2nd placed effort in this race last year off a 13lb higher mark.

Atlantic Storm has run well on his two starts so far in 2022 including when only beaten 2 ½ lengths at Stratford last time despite racing for more than half of the race with a slipping saddle. The handicapper has raised him 1lb for that effort which is fair and he should prove hard to beat.

Both Impeachment and Fast Mover could prove good enough to win this maiden on their debuts but preference goes to Grace Angel (best priced at 5/4) who sets the standard on his run here on turf last time. The daughter of Harry Angel finished 5th on her debut at Newmarket before finishing only ½ length behind Lady Jane Grey here on turf last month.

That run came in a first time tongue tie which is retained for this run and I feel a repeat of that effort should be good enough to win this with William Buick booked for the ride.

Grace Angel - 1pt @ 5/4

This looks a competitive mares’ handicap hurdle but preference goes to Sparkling Dawn (best priced at 5/1) on her stable debut for Laura Morgan. The ten-year-old mare was previously trained by Richard Hawker where she finished 3rd at Huntingdon last time when only beaten 4 ¾ lengths at the finish off a mark of 78.

The handicapper has left Sparkling Dawn on that mark of 78 and she now makes her stable debut for Laura Morgan who fits her with first time cheekpieces. She had previously worn blinkers when trained by Johnny Farrelly which didn’t appear to have any impact but she is respected on her stable debut.
