Steve Ryder is back with three tips for today's action.
The Andrew Balding trained Coltrane (best priced at 3/1) has looked progressive winning his previous two starts and he is worth backing despite this rise in class. The five-year-old returned from a 55 day break to finish 2nd in the Chester Cup behind Cleveland off a mark of 95 before winning the Ascot Stakes on his next start on the first day of Royal Ascot.
Coltrane showed a fantastic attitude to defeat the Willie Mullins trained Bring On The Night last time and this drop back down to 2 miles shouldn’t inconvenience him too much. He has a couple of pounds to find with rivals on official ratings but he is the horse coming into this race in form and I expect him to prove hard to beat.
It will be interesting to see if connections of Storm Chaser (best priced at 10/3) allow her to race here having run yesterday but I would give her a chance if she does. The Mick Channon trained mare was an impressive 26 length winner at Nottingham a week ago under an enterprising ride from Rose Dawes before finishing a close 2nd yesterday off the same mark.
The handicapper has raised Storm Chaser 11lbs her victory a week ago but she still runs off her previous mark here making her well handicapped. She was only beaten a neck yesterday under Silvestre De Sousa and it will be interesting to see if she can win again for Rose Dawes who can now claim 7lbs in this race.
The Brian Ellison trained Idoapologise (best priced at 11/8) ran well to finish a close 2nd over this course and distance a week ago and he should prove hard to beat off a 1lb lower mark. The five-year-old gelding had been disappointing so far in 2022 with him dropping down from a mark of 78 to 63 but his performance last time was a lot more encouraging.
Idoapologise travelled extremely well in the 6f contest last time and was only headed in the final strides by the well backed Good Earth who was given a good ride along the nearside rail. The handicapper has raised him 2lbs for that effort up to a mark of 65 but he in fact gets to run here off a mark of 62 making him 3lbs “well in” at the weights and I expect him to prove hard to beat.
