15:18 Newbury
With the Roger Varian stable going great guns Frankel filly DIVINE JEWEL looks to have a great opportunity to go and follow up at Newbury on Friday. She made a winning handicap debut at Lingfield last month and made all impressively on that occasion. She is up 6lb but that looks lenient to me and I think she is one to keep on side back on turf now. I don’t think she has to lead to be at her best but I know she can be keen so I think Jack Mitchell will just look to get her settled whether that will be on the lead if there isn’t pace on or just tucked in off it if there is competition in the early stages. She still looks well handicapped to me and is expected to take all the beating. Vaynor is chasing a hat-trick after impressing again at Newmarket last time but a further 6lb rise in what looks a better race will certainly demand more.
18:24 Pontefract
Kevin Ryan had a nice winner in Match Play at Hamilton yesterday and looks to be a yard turning the corner just now so WASHINGTON HEIGHTS catches the eye at Pontefract on Friday. This 2yo left his debut run well behind to win at Carlisle last month and with further improvement a near certainty I think he can make it 2 from 3. He should progress again up to 6f for the first time and despite carrying a penalty might have these covered. Shine’s Ambition also looks to have a bright enough future but he was expected to do better than he did at Chester last time and he’ll need to find more to hold off the selection. Harry Angel colt Braveheart Boy is also worth a mention as he met trouble when only sixth at Carlisle and if getting better splits here may well show what he is capable of but I thought might need more experience.
