Only six runners go to post for this 0-85 apprentice handicap but preference goes to the Charlie & Mark Johnston trained Fairmac (best priced at 5/2) who comes here following a close 2nd at Brighton last week. The four-year-old has been running consistently well with recent form figures of 23442 with his last three starts showing improvement in headgear.

Fairmac finished only a nose behind the favourite Percy Jones at Brighton last time off a mark of 78 and the handicapper has raised him 3lbs for that defeat. He runs here again off a mark of 78 making him 3lbs “well in” at the weights and I expect him to run well with Oli Stammers taking over.

This looks a competitive 0-70 handicap but I think it is worth giving the well handicapped Ornate (best priced at 20/1) one last chance. The David Griffiths trained nine-year-old was previously rated as high as 110 but has dropped down to a mark of 71 following a few below par efforts this season. He finished 2nd at Wolverhampton in January off a mark of 80 before finishing only ¾ lengths behind the winner at Southwell later that month off a mark of 82.

Ornate ran well for most of the 5f trip last time at Goodwood from 7lbs out of the handicap on his first run following a wind operation. He now drops in class from a Class 2 handicap into a Class 5 0-70 handicap for the first time in his career and I think he is worth taking a chance over a course and distance that he has won over previously.

Ornate - 1pt @ 20/1

The Christopher Mason trained Gilt Edge (best priced at 11/2) has a good record at Ffos Las with form figures of 1121 at this track in her career. The six-year-old mare last won over this course and distance in August last year off a mark of 72 so she now looks well handicapped off a mark of 66.

Gilt Edge had disappointed on her first three starts so far this year but ran a much better race last time when only beaten 3 ½ lengths at Windsor earlier this month off a mark of 69. The handicapper has been generous dropping her 3lbs for that run and that means she can drop from a 0-75 handicap into a 0-70 handicap off top weight. Connor Planas is good value for his 7lb claim and I expect Gilt Edge to run well back at this track.
