UK Horse Racing Tips: York

As you'd expect, plenty with chances here, but LORD PROTECTOR has looked ready for this greater test of stamina of late and Ralph Beckett's runner still looks unexposed, so he's the selection in a very competitive race. Thundering is another lightly-raced contender who can't be ruled out for the Kevin Ryan team, while Ravenscraig Castle has slowly come down the weights recently and he could run into a place at a nice price if putting his best foot forward.

Following a narrow defeat in the Goodwood Cup, STRADIVARIUS seeks to bounce back to winning form dropping in grade from his latest run. Boasting an impressive six from six here, his record at York is clearly second to none and it is likely the crowd will be willing him home to extend this winning streak on the Knavesmire. Any amount of rain could see the reopposing Trueshan get closer to the selection after finishing just over a length behind him at Goodwood last month and he certainly seems a big threat. Coltrane should not be underestimated following his last showing behind the aforementioned pair.

A high-class renewal of this Group 2 contest and one that may fall the way of ROYAL SCOTSMAN, a comfortable winner of the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood following a third in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. He could be produced late again here and use his turn of foot to full advantage to see off Charlie Appleby's Noble Style, who arrives unbeaten after wins at Ascot and Newmarket and may have more to come. Never Just A Dream could be the surprise package after an easy Wolverhampton success and he could also run well at a much bigger price.

Winter Power won this impressively last year at the expense of Emaraaty Ana (second) and Dragon Symbol (third). A repeat trifecta will likely pay generously this term, though, because all three haven't reached anything like that level of form this time around, so this could be up to one of the younger horses to claim Group 1 success. Flotus and the sole juvenile The Platinum Queen are likely pace angles in here but could set the race up for the strong-travelling ROYAL ACLAIM, who could hardly have been more impressive when winning the Listed City Walls over C&D.

Shampion arrives here fresh off her victory at Windsor over 1m2f and this opening mark of 84 on her first handicap start doesn't look out of her reach, but the preference is for AMANZOE to notch a four-timer. William Haggas' three-year-old has risen through the weights comfortably this season and the latest 3lb rise for her win at Ascot appears workable. Tom Marquand takes the ride today and this progressive filly has shown a likeable attitude. State Occasion is another to consider, after a comfortable win at Goodwood last time.

In an ultra-competitive maiden, with several appealing juveniles catching the eye, preference is for the Charlie Appleby-trained DESERT ORDER. The son of Dubawi built on his racecourse debut when finishing a short head behind Arrest over 1m and there could well be more to come from him. Salt Lake City seems a big threat having recorded a promising second on his racecourse bow at the Curragh earlier this month, while Hi Royal is related to a handful of smart types and should not be ruled out.

It would be a surprise if BAY OF HONOUR was still running in handicaps this time next year and Charlie Appleby's colt looks the one to beat here. The son of Sharmadal was mightily impressive at Newmarket last time and although this is tougher, he can take this on his way to bigger things. Bolthole ran well when third at Goodwood last time and could be the main danger ahead of the unexposed Leuven Power, who represents the in-form Roger Varian team.
