UK Horse Racing Tips: York

Mighty Ulysses arrives following a comfortable Listed triumph at Newmarket and was a close-up fifth in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, but BASHKIROVA could well bounce back. William Haggas' filly kept on well when scoring on her penultimate outing at Epsom in June and has been freshened up since her fifth in the Duke Of Cambridge. Alflaila did it well in Listed company at Pontefract, but was a length and a half behind Mighty Ulysses on the July Course.

Plenty in with chances, but SOUL STOPPER looks capable of completing the hat-trick after following his breakthrough Salisbury success with an impressive victory at Chester and although this demands more, he might be up to it. Soulcombe looked a little unlucky at Glorious Goodwood last time and could easily make amends, while Al Nafir is a well-bred colt who still looks open to plenty of progression. Caius Chorister has been one of the most improved horses in training but now faces her stiffest test by far.

Sandrine lines up in receipt of weight from all of her rivals and is a big player on the evidence of her Lennox Stakes defeat of Kinross, with Pogo (third) and Sacred (fifth) in behind. The latter might get a lot closer this time if ridden with less restraint, but the verdict is for last week's Hungerford Stakes winner JUMBY, who is on really good terms with himself and has clearly come out of that Newbury contest bouncing.

With only one winning favourite in the last 10 years, it is easy to look for value and EVER PRESENT ticks a lot of boxes. Not a lot went right for Jessica Harrington's raider in Listed company at Down Royal last month, but that first run since a big handicap win at Leopardstown last autumn will have blown away any cobwebs. Gaassee remains full of potential and got going too late when third behind Get Shirty in the Old Newton Cup. Licence and Okita Soushi are also unexposed four-year-olds, while Candleford is respected on his Royal Ascot demolition job.

A chance is taken on MR WAGYU, who, in an open contest, receives a tentative vote. John Quinn's charge was a winner from 4lb lower at the Curragh last month and with talented apprentice Ryan Sexton claiming 5lb, he looks primed for a big run. There was little to separate Commanche Falls (winner) and Tabdeed in the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood, and both ought to remain competitive, along with Summerghand. Others to consider are Volatile Analyst, Gulliver, and Lampang.

ROCKET RODNEY has proven to be an admirably consistent performer and he was only beaten a neck into second by Little Big Bear in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot. Since then, the son of Dandy Man has won at Listed level and only found one too good in the Molecomb last time. A reproduction of that level of form today would give him a big chance. Treasure Trove and Brave Nation are others with strong form claims, while Rousing Encore and Bolt Action complete the shortlist.

A fiercely-competitive handicap which was won last year by Lucander, who is back this season and races off a mark 5lb higher. He was third over C&D last month, despite being left with plenty to do, and looks all set for another big run. Improving three-year-olds have done well in recent years and Special Envoy could have a say after his Windsor success over further, but preference is for PHANTOM FLIGHT. A winner at Redcar and Haydock, he stepped up to this trip at Newmarket last month when third after being denied a clear run, and if he gets a better passage here, he may come home in front.
