The Dr Richard Newland trained CAPTAIN TOM CAT (best priced at 2/1) was a useful novice chaser last season and I expect him to prove hard to beat back over hurdles off a 15lb lower mark. The seven-year-old won four times over fences last season including the Grade 2 ‘Rising Stars’ Novices’ Chase before falling at the last at Cheltenham in a Grade 2 novice chase won by Third Time Lucki.

Captain Tom Cat is rated 145 over fences but makes his reappearance over hurdles off a mark of 130 so he is clearly well handicapped and has won fresh previously. Connections have booked talented 5lb claimer Cillin Leonard for the ride and I expect Captain Tom Cat to prove hard to beat.

This doesn’t look the strongest 0-105 handicap and the obvious selection is PRINCESS T (best priced at 15/8) who escapes a penalty for her easy win last week. The Neil Mulholland trained seven-year-old had previously been in good form earlier this season in Jersey winning four races in a row before winning back over hurdles last time at Worcester.

Princess T beat the favourite by 2 ½ lengths that day with the pair pulling nine lengths clear of the third. That looks strong form and the handicapper has raised her 6lbs for that victory. With that win coming in a conditional jockeys’ race, she escapes a penalty for that win and therefore races 6lbs “well in” at the weights and she should prove hard to beat as a result with Thomas Doggrell retaining the ride.

The Mick Appleby trained FINERY (best priced at 3/1) has a good record on the AW with four wins and four seconds from 13 starts and I expect her to prove hard to beat in this race. The five-year-old had previously disappointed at Doncaster and Thirsk on turf but bounced back to form last week at Chelmsford when she made all to win by 3 ¾ lengths.

Finery was due to be dropped 2lbs before that race so she only runs here off a 3lb higher mark under a 5lb penalty and that makes her 4lbs “well in” at the weights off her new rating from the handicapper. Erika Parkinson once again rides and I expect Finery to follow up her recent Chelmsford success here.

The Paul Midgley trained BUNIANN (best priced at 8/1) is a five-time course and distance winner who has won this race for the previous two seasons and should make a bold bid of landing the hat-trick. The six-year-old won this race off a mark of 73 in 2020, 76 in 2021 and gets to run in it this season off a mark of 71 so he is clearly well handicapped. He is 0-22 on turf so his recent runs can be easily excused and he ran well over this course and distance in June when 2nd by ½ length off a mark of 70.

Buniann bumped into the favourite Runninwild that day who was only rated 70 at the time and he is now rated 83. With up to four places available he looks sure to run well under Cam Hardie back over this course and distance.

Buniann - 0.5pts e/w @ 8/1
