A Plus Tard is the big odds-on favourite to win the Betfair Chase at Haydock, but does Gavin Lynch think we’ll see an upset?

Last year's runaway Betfair Chase winner and this year's Gold Cup victor A Plus Tard has been declared to defend his crown in the Grade 1 at Haydock.
The eight-year-old will take on just four others, including Protektorat who has 17 and a half lengths to find from the pair's last meeting at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

For the second episode of Racing Weekly for the 2022/23 Jump Season, show host Rishi Persad was putting the questions to National Hunt specialist Gavin Lynch and co-host Sam Turner. Here’s what each of them said about Saturday’s Betfair Chase at Haydock.
Gavin Lynch
“What's interesting is A Plus Tard is 4/1 for the Gold Cup 2023 and he'll win on Saturday. His rating is 180, Protektorat is 164, so he's 16lb clear on ratings. He'll probably run to 175 which is less than his best and next week he'll be 5/2 for the Gold Cup, there you go.”
Sam Turner
“In 17 renewals of this race we've only had one nine-runner race, we haven't ever had double figures in the times it's been run under this name. So it needs looking at with only five again this time.
“They are a good five though, albeit Frodon is only there to nick a bit of prize money. But as we saw at the weekend with Edwardstone pulling out of the Shloer Chase - we only have to lost one of the main protagonists and we are stuck with a sub-standard race.
“It should be a coronation for A Plus Tard, it’s a nice place for him to start his season off again. It's difficult to envisage defeat for him.”
