Hugo Palmer and Rossa Ryan had a near-miss at Newcastle last night in the shape of Saracen Head and they’ll be hoping to put that right here with MELWOOD BOY. This 3yo showed plenty going down just a length on debut at Newcastle and given he was slowly into stride he clocked quite a good speed figure in the process. He is sure to improve and if getting away on terms looks the most likely winner in this field. Hazel Bear has experience on side but she has work to do strictly on the clock and might prove frustrating again here. Of the debutants Wadacre Gomez looks the most interesting for Charlie Johnston. If there was significant market support for this colt then it would cause me to take a second look but he will likely come on for it. Tondeuse shaped well beaten less than a length on debut and is another one to note.

I don’t always like backing a horse that pulled up last time out but such was the promise CRAMBO showed when winning at Ascot prior to that I’m keen to give him another chance. That was a really hot race last time behind Hermes Allen and the form has already been advertised with Passing Well bolting up at Newcastle, Kilbeg King winning like a nice prospect at Fontwell and the fifth Marble Sands winning the Sidney Banks only yesterday. He has had a wind op since and a tongue-tie applied and he should be capable of bouncing back in these much calmer waters. The danger is probably Waspy as the betting is suggesting. He probably did too much in the early stages when trying to make all at Wetherby and better can be expected now. Kankin is another one that should come on now being sent over hurdles.
