UK Horse Racing Tips: Southwell

Port Noir wasn't beaten far into third over this trip at Wolverhampton last time and she is likely to remain competitive off the same mark. However, the vote goes to DREAMS DELIVERED, who looks a fascinating contender on his first start for the Michael Appleby stable. The gelding was not totally disgraced in a handicap at Cork in September and he could prove too good for these. Homer Stokes isn't out of this either, as he has been dropped a further 2lb in the ratings and is a previous C&D winner.

Walking On Clouds has been in splendid form, winning five of his last seven starts, with three of those victories coming over C&D. However, he is now 23lb higher than when that purple patch began, so a chance can be taken on CHURCHILL BAY, who was last seen finishing a close-up fourth in a class 5 handicap that has thrown out some winners since. For that effort he has been dropped 1lb, and he could making a winning start for new connections. Intervention has Oisin Murphy in the saddle and he remains on a competitive mark.

An interesting maiden, in which a chance can be taken on EAGLE DAY, who wasn't beaten far at York last June and is likely to take a big step forward from that effort to go close here. Flame Of Kodiac also makes her second start, after she finished behind four subsequent winners on her debut over 6f, and the step up in trip should suit. Smoky Mountain looks an interesting newcomer with Jamie Spencer on board and he could finish in the frame if ready to go on debut.

Although JUSTCALLMEPETE was unable to secure a fifth consecutive win on his most recent outing over a furlong shorter last month, he lost little in defeat on that occasion and is expected to be thereabouts up in trip. Hickory remains unbeaten and the gelded son of Free Eagle can give the selection plenty to think about, while Eligible is another to take into account.

A case can be made for several of these, but MICK'S SPIRIT was a beaten favourite over this trip at Chelmsford last time and is fancied to bounce back to winning form, despite a 2lb raised mark. Dalby Forest had Bert Kibbler a neck behind in second when securing a game win, also at Chelmsford, last week and he can uphold that form off the same mark, but the reopposing gelding should not be taken lightly.

Runner-up on two of his last three starts over C&D, STROXX deserves a change in luck and he may just get that here, with the booking of Oisin Murphy a major plus. The six-year-old may finally be able to get off the mark at the 38th time of asking, with recent C&D winner Another Angel looking best placed to chase him home. Completing the shortlist are Golden Prosperity, Rockley Point and The Tron.

There was only a head to separate Dubai Jeanius (first) and ISLE OF WOLVES (second) when they met over C&D last month and it is the latter who is taken to come out on top today, courtesy of a 6lb pull at the weights. Liberated Lad is another who has been in fine form of late, over a variety of trips, and he can have a big say, along with recent C&D winner Owens Lad.
